About the Author
Christie Pace was born and raised in Hawai'i, but now she resides with her husband and children (furry and furless) in Colorado. Christie's love of animals and children began as a veterinary technician while in high school. After nine years of working in small animal practices, she was inspired by Naki'o's story to begin helping other homeless animals with disABILITIES, ultimately founding the nonprofit Nakio's Underdog Rescue in 2011. Christie's mission in life is to help the underdogs and show the public how wonderful and capable disABLED animals are and to do so through books for younger readers. She is a certified Reiki master and has also been a state foster mother for children. In addition, Christie enjoys being with her two-year-old son and pets, playing the flute and ukulele, and traveling to new locations.

Wonderful Book about a dog with Prosthetic Legs

I totally love this, gave it as a gift to my friend's granddaughter. The best part is that there is a real life "Stubby" named Nakio, there are some photos of him at the back of the book, and more available on the web.

What an incredible story! Rarely can one read a book that makes you smile and cry at the same time. Stubby's story teaches of unconditional love and acceptance, compassion, and that no obstacle is too great to overcome. Four paws up from this reader!

Magic boots are real!

I enjoyed reading this story and I admire the author for her work with disABLED pets. My late mother had cerebral palsy and she too had a set of magic boots as a child. Her brother and sister would take her to the movies in a red coaster wagon, much like in the book Spirit uses a stroller to get her disabled friend Stubby out and about until he gets his magic boots. I especially loved that at the end the author included the true story of Nakio, the dog that was the inspiration for this book. Yes! Magic boots really do exist, but you'll have to buy the book to learn how the story ends!

The 20% that gets you 80% of your Results

I love this book. For what it is. And for what it is not. I’m new to data science and “what it is NOT” is very important to me. It’s NOT a lot mind-numbing math. It’s NOT long intellectual detours into academic thinking that doesn’t really apply to the kind of projects I’m wanting to do. What it is… is the Pareto Principle: the 20% of what you do that gives you 80% of your results. This is at least that 20-40%. It’s the real world basics of data science / machine learning that I can learn and use in the real world.

It’s also like having a mentor in a book form. Throughout this book, Gutierrez provide hard learned, hard working insights about how you actually do data science on a day-to-day basis. Little things that have a big impact and save lots of wasted time. Little things that you could spend the next 10 years learning yourself. Or you could read this book. I highly recommend it for people new or intermediate in their data science /ML journey.

Essential text on the foundations of computer music

This book is for anyone interested in using computers to extend the boundaries of music. The reader should already be familiar with computer programming and with music as this book treats these subjects together. It is assumed that the reader is musically literate at the level of being able to read and write common practice music notation. The author says that the reader should be familiar with mathematics at the level of high school trigonometry and algebra. However, I think that the reader should also be familiar with digital signal processing, as this book does not take too much time and space to introduce the subject and much of the book relies heavily on DSP concepts and structures.

After a brief introduction, chapter 2 of the book takes the reader on a wild ride through the world of digital audio, starting with simple representation of sound via sinusoids, through ADC and DAC issues, and concluding with a discussion of both IIR and FIR digital filters with some programming examples in C. Chapter 3 builds on the ideas in chapter 2 and shows the reader how to use digital filtering concepts to build structures that simulate musical instruments. The author also introduces his own programming environment for computer music, CMusic. Chapter 4 is all about spatial hearing, direction cues, echoes and reverberation, and the mathematical modeling of all of these phenomena. Chapter 5, "Composing", talks about algorithmic composition via random numbers, Markov processes, and noise. This is probably the chapter that depends the most on the reader having musical maturity. The appendices have a nice treatment of mathematics and of CMusic.

The ideas and algorithms discussed in this book are largely timeless, and that is why I still use my copy a great deal even 16 years after it was published. However, I will knock a single star off of my rating for the fact that the author's program, CMusic, is enshrouded in secrecy. The author will tell you how to use it, what functions are in it, etc. However, even now, the source code for it is not freely available. If you are working on a Windows platform the best you can do is find a monolithic .exe program that works best under DOS and can crash under Windows. And because I don't have access to the source code, I have no idea why this happens. If Mr. Moore had been a little more "open source" in his attitude towards CMusic, it might have caught on more than it ultimately did. Don't let this problem prevent you from buying the book, though. It is one of the best written books on computer music that I have ever read and it has many good ideas in it, and I do recommend it for anyone interested in computer music.

A book for technically oriented musicians!

The range of subjects it covers is vast and they are presented in a simple manner. It's a Classic!!!
That said, If I had to choose a single book on the subject, it wouldn't be this one. This is more of a complementary and introductory book to some principles to computer music. The information in it is outdated, and while most principles still apply, there are many more newer books that excel at explaining the many concepts.
As a complement to other books in the subject, I highly recommend it. It's a must have for anyone serious about computer music as it provides a great historical perspective to computer music.

About the Author
After progressing through various martial arts, Masaaki Hatsumi found his life’s mentor, Takamatsu Toshitsugu, and studied under him for the next fifteen years. Hatsumi became the 34th Grandmaster of Togakure-ry? Ninjutsu and eight other arts, which he unified into the Bujinkan system. While traveling the world, teaching thousands of individual students as well as law enforcement agencies, he received numerous accolades from politicians and spiritual leaders of many nationalities. He has also worked as a professional osteopath, acted in a popular television series, written many books on ninjutsu and budo, and was, for many years, the Chairman of the International Department of the Japan Literary Artists’ Club.

About the Author
Ron Iverson first visited China in 1984 as the personal representative of the Mayor of Chicago as part of a Sister Cities program. For the past 30 years he has continued to regularly visit China and has founded joint business ventures with Chinese partners and taught Business Strategy at Tongji University in Shanghai. He also personally arranged the first ever exhibition of Forbidden City artifacts from the Palace Museum in Beijing to tour the US. Early in his visits to China, Iverson discovered The Three Kingdoms and came to realize the enormous cultural significance the Chinese people place in the book. Believing that one needed to be familiar with the principles revealed in the book in order to find business or political success in China, and being dissatisfied with existing translations, Iverson decided to fund and edit a new translation aimed towards delivering the thrill of a contemporary novel while imparting understanding of a key aspect of Chinese culture.

Yu Sumei is a professor of English at East China Normal University. She has translated several English language books into Chinese and is the first native Chinese speaker to translate The Three Kingdoms into English. She invested a total of two years into working on this new translation of The Three Kingdoms, spending the time on sabbatical in New York with her daughter, who typed the translation out as she completed it.

Vol. 3 provides an exciting conclusion to the preceding volumes. In Volumes 1 and 2, Zhuge Liang has masterminded, with clever maneuvers, victory at the Battle of Red Cliff against Cao Coa and then gone on to capture important cities, thus vastly increasing Liu Bei’s military power with additional soldiers and control of wealthy cities and provinces.
Liu Bei dies in Vol. 3 leaving control of his kingdom to his son Liu Shan. Cao Cao, seeks to take advantage of Liu Bei’s death and inexperience of Liu Shan. Cao Cao comes up with a cunning scheme to attack Liu Shan’s kingdom from five directions. I was anxious to read how Zhuge Liang was going to deal with this new threat. However he reclused himself in his hut and would not come out. Finally after 3 days, Liu Shan goes to Zhuge Liang’s hut to hear what plans he has in mind. Zhuge Liang has brilliant plans to thwart each of the five attacks. He will himself lead the attack again the fierce Man tribes. In his fight against the Mans, after the battle he releases their leader on the faith of his good word that they will not fight again. This happens six times that Zhuge Liang battles and has victory over the Mans, each time capturing the leader and releasing him. After the seventh time, Zhuge Liang refuses to even see the leader of the Mans and has his assistant release him. At this, the leader of the Mans was so humiliated that he agreed to have a peace alliance with Liu Shan and have peaceful cooperation in the future.
The Three Kingdoms story is truly one of the great classics of literature. This translation is easy reading. The footnotes were not only helpful, but at those special key locations in the writing, the footnotes at the bottom of the page made the flow of the story more meaningful.

Dr. Archie B. Carroll is Robert W. Scherer Chair of Management and Corporate Public Affairs, Emeritus, and Professor of Management Emeritus in the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. He is also part-time Director of the Nonprofit Management and Community Service Program in the Terry College. Dr. Carroll received his three academic degrees from The Florida State University in Tallahassee. He has published numerous books, chapters, articles, and encyclopedia entries. His research has appeared in the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, BUSINESS AND SOCIETY, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, BUSINESS ETHICS: A EUROPEAN REVIEW, and many others. He has served on the editorial review boards of BUSINESS AND SOCIETY, BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, and the JOURNAL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS. Professionally, he is former division chair of the Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division of the Academy of Management, a founding board member of the International Association for Business and Society (IABS), and past president of the Society for Business Ethics. He was elected Fellow of the Southern Management Association (1995) and Fellow of the Academy of Management (2005). Dr. Carroll has also been recognized with the Sumner Marcus Award (1992) for Distinguished Service by the SIM Division of the Academy of Management; Distinguished Research Award (1993) by Terry College of Business, University of Georgia, for his work in corporate social performance and business ethics; and Distinguished Service Award (2003) by the Terry College of Business. He was named Professor Emeritus (2005) and in 2008 he received the Outstanding Ph.D. Award from the College of Business, Florida State University.

The late Dr. Ann K. Buchholtz was Professor of Leadership and Ethics and Research Director of the Institute for Ethical Leadership in the Rutgers Business School at Rutgers University. She received her Ph.D. from the Stern School of Business at New York University. Dr. Buchholtz's research focused on the social and ethical implications of corporate governance, in particular, and the relationship of business and society in general. Her work has appeared in Business and Society, Business Ethics Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, Organization Science, the Journal of Management Studies, and Corporate Governance and International Review. She served on the editorial boards of Business and Society and Business Ethics Quarterly. Her teaching and consulting activities focused on the areas of business ethics, social issues, strategic leadership, and corporate governance. Her service learning activities in the classroom received a Trailblazer Advocate of the Year award from the Domestic Violence Council of Northeast Georgia. She was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including Profound Effect on a Student Leader. She was also named Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Georgia. Dr. Buchholtz was past Division Chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. She served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and the ethics task force that designed a Code of Ethics for the Academy and became the inaugural chairperson of the Academy's Ethics Adjudication Committee when the code was put into effect. In 2015, she received the Sumner Marcus Award from the SIM Division of the Academy of Management.

Not worth reading and buying that's for sure

If you ever have a class that recommends this book I would encourage you not to buy it! It literally only states super basic stuff that we all should know on our own. If your professor decides to quiz in it, most answers can easily be googled.(questions to this book are standardized and therefore a ton of people have the answers online.
