The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs, by Stephen S. Ilardi

In the past decade, depression rates have skyrocketed, and one in four Americans will suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us that our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life.

Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need. The Depression Cure program has already delivered dramatic results, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications.

Saved my life when doctors, meds couldn't
By Megonotron
I've waited a full year to write this review (literally, I ordered the book 367 days ago!) This book was recommended to me by two extended family members struggling with mild to moderate depression. I had been fighting with SEVERE clinical depression; it robbed me of my life, of enjoying my husband and children. I sought medical, psychological, and psychiatric help for about two years... Several medications, dosage changes, doctors, therapists, etc... Nothing made a dent.
And then I read this book. And everything changed.
His 6 steps gave me something to focus on, other than "being sick." Just the change from seeing Life from a Wellness perspective rather than a Sickness perspective changed so much. Knowing the science behind depression, anxiety, and the brain really gave me reason to work on each step... Getting the kids schlepped to the gym with me, practicing light therapy, forcing myself to keep busy hands/mind by coloring in coloring books (you can even get nicer ones for adults, which help), reading novels, listening to audiobooks... Distracting from my illness, stopping my mind from racing and ruminating.
Fast forward a year. I have lost 40 pounds as a convenient side effect of the exercise (from a size 16 to a size 4), ran 2 half-marathons, and completely changed my life.
Depression is like alcoholism or cancer... Once you have it, you'll always have it to a certain extent, considering yourself "on the wagon" or "in remission". But I continue to take my vitamins/supplements and put in the work to make sure I never go back. I keep a list of the 6 steps taped inside my kitchen cupboard so, if I'm feeling a little off, I can check the list and say "ah, I'm not sleeping well. Time to get outside and soak in some sunlight to set my body clock."
Buy this book. Never, in a million years, did I think I could climb out of the hole Depression had buried me in. I was drowning. I PROMISE this book will work if you just read about the steps and start following them. FORCE yourself to get out of bed and do the work EVERY DAY. No matter what. YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT.

Worth a Read
By Jonathan
I have been in & out of mild depression most of my adult life, read this book 2 years ago and was able to get myself into a positive mindset that got me out into public smiling and being nice to people and as a result wonderful wonderful things were brought into my life. Negativity and sadness helps nothing, but getting out of it alone is not always easy. The past year and a half I met a girl and things have never been better, including my attitude. Well, of course recently circumstances have changed, and the incredible high I got from changing my life around has disappeared and with that brought me the most intense misery I've ever experienced. That mild depression was nothing compared to this to this full blown feeling of rejection that has disabled my ability to live and left me in bed for the past 3 months unable to leave the apt during the most beautiful time of the year (as well as being a total dick to people at work). I decided it was time to change, that this was not the person I wanted to be and that there was absolutely no way I could go on feeling this way another second so I started diving into research of how to combat this feeling, starting with picking up this book again.

The book is divided into sections discussing each of the 6 steps to get your life back on track. It goes on to explain how these things help. Some are common sense like exercise, others are less well known like getting the right nutrients by supplementing with Omega 3s. While all 6 of these steps are vital to recovery, it does not mean your depression will go away without a HUGE effort on your part to get out and make it happen (you can do it!). Things like 'engaging in social activity' is especially difficult for me for instance because friends have never come easy in my life, most of my best friends have moved out of state and reconnecting with those still here is hard because they have found their own groups to be with and changed so much. It's frustrating to read things like socialize when you have nobody around to socialize with. Another cause is poor sunlight and proper sleep, which I realize because I work 3rd shift is a challenge over what the average person may face. Of course this reconfirms what I already know, that lifestyle change is the only way to get rid of these demons. "You can not discover new oceans until you lose sight of the shore" The book gives a great recommendation for this that I'd never heard about, buying a light box. I am absolutely going to do this once I save the money, it is probably some of the better advice I've gotten from this book and I hope it works as well as reviews have said it does.

Prehaps the hardest step to do (and the most damaging) is to stop dwelling on negative thoughts (ruminating) and while the book offers some solid suggestions like preoccupying your mind with music or tv, it doesn't stop the thoughts when a distraction is unavailable. This thinking can, depending on how its taken, lead to addictive behavior. I notice I play video games for hours not because I actually enjoy them so anymore, but only because when I stop, reality hits and it becomes difficult to deal with my thoughts again. My job is the biggest killer because as great of a job as it maybe, I spend lots of time letting my mind race and thinking 10+ hrs a night on repeat. Even the radio can't always shut them out. Goes back to my point about changing your lifestyle. I think the author should have mentioned the importance of a (healthy) hobby, and maybe he did (to be honest I've done alot of skipping around and haven't read probably more than 70% of the book at this point). I found art (pen ink and prismacolor pencils) to be what works for me along with playing an instrument on my nights off. Art is a way to express my emotions in pictures, and it brings me back to being a kid when my dream (that never happened) was to be a great artist. Rediscovering old dreams and never giving up on them is very important, and just because I feel too old or inexperienced to go to art school, does not mean that I'm not trying to reaquire the dreams I've lost over the past 10 years on my own terms. The past is the past but it's how we handle our failures and what we do with the present that makes the real difference.

Of course the author does not have all of the answers, nobody does, but just be aware that your battle will need to take creativity and mind control of your own to turn things around. These steps only help you identify what the root of the problem is, it is not a fix all.

I'd like to add a personal note, something I found was really hurting me that you may want to try and that is coffee!! Coffee was not mentioned in here and you may or may not be aware how addictive coffee is and that it is to some people a very powerful drug (a stimulant) that can lift you up and when you come down it can have tremendously damaging effects on your emotional wellbeing especially if you are prone to depression. Ever since I got an espresso machine I have been in love with coffee (espresso). I've since found out that coffee weakens the production of GABA, an amino acid created by a certain strain of intestinal bacteria and used by the brain as a neurotransmitter. GABA is essential to relaxing, helps aid in sleep, relax from stress, manage anxiety, lower cortisone levels (cortisone is a stress horomone and breeds cancer!!) etc. SO I've stopped drinking coffee, difficult but I've walked away from harder things in my life. Started taking a GABA supplement and I feel like it has helped me significantly. I'm not a doctor or giving medical advice, but do your own research especially on holistic medicine and nutrition and I think you will eventually find the tools you need to fix these problems.

I think this is a great book and that's coming from somebody with a very short attention span (I can't even watch movies let alone read a book). But this has captured my attention which is absolutely amazing, 70% it's probably the most I've read off the internet since high school. It is well written easy to understand and includes an interesting history on why tribal cultures and our ancestors were more well off mentally. Anybody who follows these 6 steps religiously may not find themself completely out of the hole but I believe they will definately get on the right track and feel at least like their problems are manageable. Remember, things good and bad happen for a reason. If I never fell into this myself I would not be writing this review. I hope this helps atleast 1 person! Good luck everyone, hope everyone finds their cure and is better able to focus on their life purpose :D

Easier and more fun than the chart suggested in the book
By Z in SLC
This book is worth reading just for the chapter on rumination. However, I found an easier way to rein in my ruminations than listed in the book. I created a personal mantra that brings me into the present and out of the past plus I took up meditation. Easier and more fun than the chart suggested in the book. But without the book I would have never had a name for what I needed to eliminate from my life. I have never thought the positive thinking think was valid. But changing your thinking in the moment on the spot is magic. My daughter says I am a more peaceful positive person and she loves not having to listen to all the old demoralizing stories anymore than have nothing to do with now. So I am grateful to this book for the piece I needed to get on the path to freedom from my own crazy thoughts.

About the Author
Ben Counter is one of Black Library’s most popular Warhammer 40,000 authors, with two Horus Heresy novels to his name – Galaxy in Flames and Battle for the Abyss. He is the author of the six-volume Soul Drinkers series and The Grey Knights Omnibus. For Space Marine Battles he has written Malodrax, and has turned his attention to the Space Wolves with the novella Arjac Rockfist: Anvil of Fenris and a number of short stories. He is a fanatical painter of miniatures, a pursuit which has won him his most prized possession: a prestigious Golden Demon award. He lives in Portsmouth, England.
Josh Reynolds has blazed a trail across the Warhammer World with the novels Master of Death, Neferata and Knight of the Blazing Sun, along with the Gotrek and Felix tales Charnel Congress, Road of Skulls and The Serpent Queen. As well as numerous short stories, he has also written the Warhammer 40,000 audio drama Master of the Hunt and contributed to the Apocalypse anthology Damocles with the novella Hunter's Snare. He lives and works in Sheffield.
Guy Haley is the author of the Space Marine Battles novel Death of Integrity, as well as Skarsnik and Baneblade, and the Horus Heresy audio drama 'Hunter's Moon'. He worked for many years on magazines, including Games Workshop’s White Dwarf. Since 2009 he has been a wandering writer, working in both magazines and novels. He lives in Somerset with his wife and son.
Phil Kelly has been a devotee of myths, monsters and magic for three decades, the last of which has been spent working as a games developer in Games Workshop’s Design Studio. Over the years, Phil has made body parts as a sculptor, roamed the roofs of Nottingham as a free runner, played the stages of Glastonbury, dived shipwrecks in Thailand and discovered the time-saving joys of extreme ironing in his home county of Essex. Since meeting his future wife at a Los Angeles beach party, Phil has begun to settle down a bit. He now leads a nice normal life writing about fantastical armies, undead pirates and gribblies from outer space.

Good collection on the same theme and events
By JPS
This is a good collection of four novellas, each of which is about a hundred pages long. The general theme is the Tau invasion of the Empire, beyond the Gulf of Damocles, and their attack of the strategic Agrellan system. An interesting feature of this collection is that while the four stories can be read separately and are written by four separate authors, they are also clearly linked and the authors seem to have coordinated and talked to each other.

Another good feature is that this title does add to the existing collections in several respects. The descriptions of the Tau and the multiple illustrations of their highly advanced technology and their consummate skills of deception, subversion and surprise are one of the most interesting aspects that are common to all four stories. A second element that I enjoyed was the variety of styles and perspectives from which various episodes of the same theme of events – the Tau invasion – are being told. One perspective which I found particularly interesting what that of the human “traitors” – whether an ex-captain of the Imperial Guard or an ex-Inquisitor turned rogue – serving the Tau against the Empire of Humankind and wanting to believe in the “Greater Good” because they hope it is better than the ghastly, decadent and cruel Empire.

Those liking battles will, of course, find plenty to their liking. Interestingly, and for a change, the Imperials do not end up by winning, quite the contrary in fact since their shock troops, among which are the White Scars of Korsarro Khan and the Raven Guard commanded by their Chapter Master. Also present are a regiment of Catachans and the (great!) heavily armoured and devastating Knights of Voldoris who turn out to be more than a match for their Tau counterparts.

I liked all four stories, although some are perhaps better than others. While not really “bad”, I found that “Black Leviathan” was perhaps the weakest of the four, essentially because the behaviour of the squad of Jade Dragons’ Space Marines, and of their sergeant in particular, is hard to believe. At a minimum, the author should have provided more elements and explanations, perhaps more context about this Successor Chapter (about which I knew nothing, not even who their Primogenitor Chapter was supposed to be!) to explain why they compromised the whole mission in the way they did. The end of this story is also somewhat implausible, with the sergeant commanding the Jade Dragons’ squad getting of rather lightly given his actions.

Then there are the characters, many of which are rather interesting. You will get to know quite a bit more about the White Scars, their captain, but also a couple of their seers and Cemakan, the old grumpy veteran, but also about the Tau with their gifted warlord (or rather “warlady”) Shadowsun, and some of the other caster, in particular the idealist Skilltalker, ready to sacrifice himself for the “Greater Good”, and the rather unscrupulous Supreme Ethereal. My personal favourite, however, was Patriarch Tybalt of House Terryn and his massive Imperial Knights.

There are nevertheless a few glitches here and there and this is why I will rate the collection four stars, but not five. I have already mentioned those in “Black Leviathan”. There is also one in “Blood Oath”, the first and one of the strongest stories. Several mentions are made about a certain Traitor Shoh to which the warlord Shadowsun seems to be somewhat related but you never get to understand who this person is, what he has done to become a “traitor” in the eyes of the Tau and what the relationship with Shadowsun happens to be.

Problems with all these Space Marine novels
By Steven L. Coker
The problem with most of these Space Marine novels is they are pretty much all the same plot -- Bad guys pop up and catch them off guard. Big Battle - everyone dies, except the Big Name bad guys (who always seem to escape).
The Space Marines NEVVVER seem to be on the offensive and are always out-numbered.
Cant figure out why the Astartes NEVVVER seem to be the aggressors in these books. A few of the writers of these books are quite good but need to work on different angles.
I also wonder if anyone is ever going to write about the battle for Earth, when the Emperor and the traitors (Horus) battled it out. Something everyone knows happened but it has never been novelized.

Bookworm Speaks!- Damocles (Space Marine Battles)

Warhammer 40,000

Damocles

by Phil Kelly, Guy Haley, Ben Counter, and Josh Reynolds

****

The Story: Four Novellas that focus on the events of the second Damocles Gulf Crusade.

Two centuries ago, the Imperium of Man and the upstart Tau Empire fought to a standstill in the Damocles Gulf. Now, as the 41st Millennium draws to a close, the Tau have returned. As the world of Agrellan falls under attack, the White Scars and the Raven Guard rush to its defense, but with the skilled Commander Shadowsun leading the alien forces, the Space Marines and their allies are hard pressed. Kor’sarro Khan, Huntmaster of the White Scars, swears that he will win the day in the most direct way possible-by taking Shadowsun’s head.

The Good: First off…it is a story of the White Scars. A first founding Legion under the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, who have an emphasis of mobile conflict, are sorely lacking proper representation in the Black Library, which is a real shame as they are quite fascinating. This is only the third book that emphasizes the White Scars to any significant degree. The same can be said about the Raven Guard. Bookworm doesn’t think he owns any books with the sons of Corvus Corax as the focus, which is also a shame. To see both chapters further expanded over the course of the novellas is a real treat. Furthering the entertainment value is the contrast to how the different chapters operate. The White Scar’s ride proudly into battle and collect the heads of their foes and display as trophies. The Raven Guard operate from the shadows and strike silently, their names unknown, even among their brothers. Contrast is a gateway to conflict and it leads into the primary reason why the antagonists of this volume are so appealing.

Of all the enemies of the Imperium of Man that Games Workshop has introduced, the Tau Empire may not be a favorite but from a creative standpoint they are one of the best. A great way to really challenge a protagonist is to pit them against themselves. The Tau represents what the Imperium of Man should have been had the Emperor had not been imprisoned upon the Golden Throne, a peaceful, progressive society, which values technological innovation and a government that works for the benefit of all, (supposedly). The Tau are also zealots in the same way that the Space Marines are. The Astartes fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Emperor and the Tau fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Greater Good, the philosophy that governs their society. The other enemies of the Imperium are fairly one dimensional: The orks just want to pillage and plunder, the Tyranids just want to eat everything, the Chaos Space Marines want to do both, and don’t get Bookworm started on the Necrons. The Tau are not a force of nature like Orks or Tyranids, they are a rival society which has multiple dimensions, same as the Imperium.

The only exception to this might be the Eldar but Bookworm has not read any stories about them yet.

Also, like the Imperium of Man, there may be less than honorable forces at work. While the Tau preach something that sounds good, the authors are wise to include little tidbits here and there that show that there is something far more insidious to the Tau than meets the eye. This is just Bookworm’s own hypothesis but it is hinted in one of the novellas that the Tau surgically alter humans to look like Tau. Whose greater good is it?

Speaking of covert motives. We get a new Space Marine Chapter! The Jade Dragons are introduces in the third novella of the volume. They are very interesting and Bookworm hopes we see them again. They definitely follow a more mystical approach to war than the Ultramarines. Like the differences between the White Scars and Raven Guard, the contrast between the two very different chapters provides amusing conflicts and different approaches between the chapters of the novella.

The Flaws: While by itself, the story is not bad, the fact is that the third novella in the book, Black Leviathan, feels out of place compared to the other stories. It takes place on a different planet other than Agrellan, which is contrary to the plot summary, and it involves neither the White Scars or the Raven Guard. It is back to the Black Library favorites of the Ultramarines, and The Jade Dragons, which we know nothing about. The other three stories share a common denominator but the only thing the Black Leviathan has in common with the other three is the fact that the Tau are there. We have plenty of Ultramarines stories, lets keep exploring the world of the Khan and the Raven.

Another common flaw is the disparate head-hopping that takes place. The perspectives switch places between the character pretty often and it can get a little confusing. In a few of the chapters the pacing needs some reworking.

Final Verdict: Damocles is an excellent book that provides multiple perspectives on a great crusade of the Imperium of Man.

Four out Five Stars

Basic Algebra I: Second Edition (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Nathan Jacobson

A classic text and standard reference for a generation, this volume and its companion are the work of an expert algebraist who taught at Yale for two decades. Nathan Jacobson's books possess a conceptual and theoretical orientation, and in addition to their value as classroom texts, they serve as valuable references.
Volume I explores all of the topics typically covered in undergraduate courses, including the rudiments of set theory, group theory, rings, modules, Galois theory, polynomials, linear algebra, and associative algebra. Its comprehensive treatment extends to such rigorous topics as Lie and Jordan algebras, lattices, and Boolean algebras. Exercises appear throughout the text, along with insightful, carefully explained proofs. Volume II comprises all subjects customary to a first-year graduate course in algebra, and it revisits many topics from Volume I with greater depth and sophistication.

This book made me an algebraist
By Richard P. Edwards
I mean it: 5 stars -- I can think of few books I'd rate as highly. But one warning: This book suits my taste for essay-like exposition, an approach diametrically opposed to the more common practice of tables of numbered theorems and symbol-only proofs. If you prefer to think of a module as a homomorphism from a ring into the ring of endomorphisms of an Abelian group, this book is the right approach; if you prefer a list of equations defining a module, then do not use this book as your primary source. Few mathematicians have a good sense of language, but the comma splices, absent articles, poor syntax, near-aphasia, and sentence-fear prevalent in many texts are absent here. If you are writing for human beings, your text need not obey Fortran syntax, as does Hungerford's. Jacobson can write. In English.
The chapter on Galois theory covers more finite Galois theory than most algebraists need to know. Jacobson's style of merging the necessary symbolism into an essay-like presentation is strongest in this long chapter, and planted concepts firmly in my mind in the same language that I would use to describe them in conversation.
But mathematics is not learned through conversation, and that is the crux of the objections to this book. I'm grateful that my undergraduate professor used this book, but I would not recommend doing so, as some good students do not read it easily. I'd use this as a secondary text, with Hungerford, Fraleigh, or Herstein as the primary source. Mathematical writing would be better if all students saw Jacobson's approach at some point in their careers, Jacobson is the best exponent of terse, clean, textbook-as-essay style. Should you dislike his approach, exposure to his style might still broaden your ideas on mathematical exposition and help you better define your own style; a reaction against his methods can sharpen your own game.
A masterful book.

the best intro to algebra for future mathematicians
By mathwonk
This book is by an expert algebraist who has rewritten his earlier introduction to algebra from the experience gained after 20 years as a Yale professor. It contains correct insightful proofs, carefully explained as clearly as possible without compromising their goal of reaching the bottom of each topic.

Other books say that one cannot square the circle with ruler and compass because it would require solving an algebraic equation with rational coefficients whose root is pi, and after all pi is a transcendental number. But Jacobson also proves that pi is a transcendental number, so as not to leave a logical gap. Naturally the burden on the student is somewhat higher than if he is merely told this fact without proof.

It is true that some other books include many more examples, and discuss them at extreme length, whereas Jacobson's book is less than 500 pages, hence cannot include as many words. But Jacobson's words are sometimes far better chosen, as he clearly understands the material at greater depth than other authors.

In his introduction to R modules, he discusses the most natural possible ring that acts on an abelian group: the ring of its endomorphisms. This is the true motivation behind the usefulness of R modules structures but is not even hinted at in most other books.

In his treatment of factorization in Noetherian domains, Jacobson carefully proves the existence of a single irredudible factor before proving existence of a complete factorization, thus avoiding perfectly a logical trap that some authors do not even notice.

In his discussion of the structure theory of finitely generated modules over a pid, he gives the concrete proof using diagonalization of matrices, that will actually be applied later to linear transformations, rather than some abstract existence proof that will be useless later, as many other authors do.

This sort of careful attention to the internal structure of the subject, and expert skill at presenting it correctly and clearly, are possible only to someone like Jacobson who is a true master of his area. I have only recently, as a mature mathematician, become aware of how wonderful his book really is for beginners who want to learn the subject correctly, from the beginning.

Some students not used to reading paragraphs, have been frustrated at his style of presentation, without realizing the superiority of his content. I can only recommend that those readers try harder to read his book, as it will repay far more than other sources.

Jacobson has made a sincere, and I think very successful effort, to write his 2 volumes on 2 different levels of sophistication, the first being back - bendingly clear and painstakingly organized as to the true logic of the subject.

After choosing a different source for my beginning graduate algebra course, I discovered the superiority of Jacobson, and wondered in amazement how such a great work could have been allowed to go out of print. After reading these reviews I understand. The readers who criticize the experts have eventually managed to veto the use of their works in classes. This makes the market share fall, and the books cease to exist. We have been obliged recently to remove Jacobson from our list of PhD references, in spite of its excellence, because it is out of print. This is a real disservice to our PhD students seeking to understand the material they will need to use.

Average students, i.e. most of us, have the right to learn a subject, but we should not have the right, and we are unwise to try, to vote the best books out of existence simply because we cannot understand them. Let us aspire to understanding the deeper treatment in Jacobson's book. Let's put our copy of Jacobson away and save it, if we cannot yet read it.

Clearly it is not the first book for everyone, but it is still perhaps the best, treatment of the material in existence to my knowledge at the upper undergraduate - graduate level, for the student who aspires to real mastery and understanding. If you want to be mathematician, you should get and read this book above others. Indeed the AMA rates both volumes of Jacobson as "essential" for every undergraduate library.

Superb book
By Remi
This book and its sequel BAII form a superb algebra resource that I use constantly. While this book is neither a reference (in the sense of Bourbaki) nor a textbook (its style is far too elegant to be classified as a textbook), it is beautifully written and one can learn a great deal by reading it. A word of warning though: this book presupposes a fair amount of mathematical maturity, so I would not recommend this book as an introduction to abstract algebra. On the other hand, it is a great complement to algebra courses and its originality and the variety of topics covered make it an invaluable resource.

Animal Alterity: Science Fiction and the Question of the Animal, by Sherryl Vint

Animal Alterity uses readings of science fiction texts to explore the centrality of animals for our ways of thinking about human. It argues that the academic field of animal studies and the popular genre of science fiction share a number a critical concerns: thinking about otherness and the nature of human being; desiring communication across species difference; and interrogating the social and ethical consequences of changes in science and technology. We are living in a complex set of contradictory and conflicting relations with non-human animals. This book maps this complex terrain, arguing that we are better able to perceive options for a transformed politics if we perceive our various material relations with non-human animals within a deeper understanding of the functions of the category 'animal'.

Review

"An intriguing and enlightening book. Nicely produced, well-edited and comprehensive, reflecting a great deal of effort by the author to collect and synthesize the sometimes disparate material ... it is definitely recommended for a university research library."--SFRA Review

"Sherryl Vint has done seriously valuable work in Animal Alterity: Science Fiction and the Question of the Animal, illustrating how the HAS lens, and by extension other strands of the ecocritical mode, can illuminate texts not normally associated with environmentalism. While her text selection principles could profitably have been clarified, and her engagement with sf readers could have been more detailed, Vint models here just how effective a careful, environmentally minded literary reading can be."--The Goose

"Animal Alterity is an engaging, intelligent study which is perceptively and accessibly theorised, and refreshingly innovative."--Peter Wright, Edge Hill University

Animal Alterity Vint has provided a thorough and nuanced study of other animals in sf, one that cogently demonstrates the potent connections between sf and animal studies. This book should be of great use to any scholar of the fantastic interested in how animals figure in their texts-sf or otherwise. ... Animal Alterity is a very strong work of sf scholarship, and, whatever your interests, is an exemplar of engaged and engaging intellectual labor."--Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts

Human-animal studies through the lens of science fiction
By K. Bunker
I found this book to be a deeply interesting and rewarding examination of how the philosophical themes of human-animal studies have been explored in various works of science fiction.

This volume makes an interesting companion-piece to The Animal Fable in Science Fiction and Fantasy by Bruce Shaw. In that book, Shaw's focus is on examining the presence of animals in SF and how animals have been used to explore some of SF's favorite themes. In Animal Alterity, Vint's focus is more on the subject of human-animal studies (HAS). This branch of philosophy concerns itself with topics such as animal rights, the value of animal life, the nature of the human-animal divide, and more. To quote from the book's introduction:
"... there are many reasons to connect sf and HAS. Both are interested in foundational questions about the nature of human existence and sociality. Both are concerned with the construction of alterity and what it means for subjects to be thus positioned as outsiders. Both take seriously the question of what it means to communicate with a being whose embodied, communicative, emotional and cultural life--perhaps even physical environment--is radically different from our own."
And elsewhere in the introduction:
"... sf's long history of exploring questions of alterity and particularly of the boundary between human and other sentient beings--frequently explored through robot or AI characters--further positions it as uniquely suited to interrogating the human-animal boundary."

Thus, the target audience of this book may lean more toward those interested in human-animal studies than those strictly interested in science fiction. The writings of philosophers such as Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Donna Haraway figure heavily in the book, and the science fiction works discussed appear somewhat secondarily, serving to illustrate various philosophical themes and ideas.

However, Sherryl Vint is among the leading contemporary scholars of science fiction, and her knowledge of the field is encyclopedic. The short stories and novels she selects for examination range from the well-known to the obscure, but you can be sure that they were all chosen with deliberate care.

This is a scholarly book, but Vint's writing is accessible and relatively free of the jargon and convoluted sentence structure that characterizes much academic writing. It's only when she quotes passages from academics such as the above-mentioned philosophers that the reader is reminded of how self-consciously difficult and dense such writing often is.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in human-animal studies; and for those interested in both HAS and science fiction, it's nothing less than a must-read.

Good historical reference material
By Enrique Torres
There is good reason for this book being in it's fourteenth edition; it is comprehensive, balanced ,concise not overly laborious reading and a flat out good history book. I have a previous edition that I used to supplement teaching my students with and continue to use when helping my high school age son. The contributors are brainiacs, we're talking experts in their fields too. A couple of case in points, Lerner received his PH. D. from Princeton and is a professor who has authored several books. Meacham did his undergraduate work at Yale before doing his graduate work at Cambridge and Harvard. The book takes blocks of time like the Age of Absolutism, Intellectual Revolutions of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, The French Revolution and all the major developments of Western Civilization. There is just enough information to go in depth but not feel like you are overburdened with data. The modern world is also explored and contemporary Western Civilizations. There are also many colorful maps, pictures and illustrations to supplement the writing and to enhance the learning experience. A very helpful feature is subject titles along the sides of the paragraphs that correspond to the detailed information. This is helpful when you are seeking specific information on a subject and do not want to read pages and pages of information to find your facts. I would highly recommend this book to any student of history or teacher of advanced middle school or high school courses on world history.

Horrible textbook.
By A reader
This has to be the worst textbook I have ever used in my life. Terms are not in bold, there are no review questions, and the authors do not provide footnotes with there sources. The book is impossible to Outline or even take notes on since it follows no coherent structure. Sometimes it will talk about the consequences of things, before it discuss's there causes. It also has numerous historical mistakes. Our teacher points them out every class, but some even I cna see on my own.

The book filled with typos. It says that nationalism challenged neo-platonism. I think it means nominalism. Please do not use this as a main textbook for the course. You students will not do well.

Unremarkable
By Ethan Aric Quinn
I just finished running this campaign, and my group did have some fun with it. However, some of the negatives are fairly noticable. My largest complaint was the railroading nature of the plot, with the campaign heavy-handedly forcing the PCs along a set path. Secondly, the artwork is terrible. Not so much in its quality, as in its inaccuracy. It was rare when the pictures of NPCs matched up to thier written descriptions. Several of the seneraios are unimaginative and bland (This is partcularly true towards the end of the campaign.)
Some of the positive aspect of the campaign consist of its action elements. Fitting perfectly with the feel of d20 CoC, the PCs will be doing more than thier fair share of fighting. So if your looking for a high-action CoC game, this is the campiagn to get. Also, some of the early senarios are rather interesting and fun (The 3rd chapter is my favorite).

it is a pretty good adventure that is very epic in its scale
By Richard Bellows
An interesting blend of Call of Cthulhu with the D20 system. I haven't run the adventure, though there are parts which are more straight forward, where the investigators have to do something to move the plot along. I would tweak passages such as this, though as a whole, it is a pretty good adventure that is very epic in its scale.

Tolerable theme, but needs some massaging
By Amazon Customer
CoC isn't known for its long storylines. Surviving even a single encounter with Lovecraftian denizens is a struggle, particularly for entry level characters. And given your most likely dealing with people walking out of a D20 D&D campaign, prepare to deal with a lot of whining that they don't overcome the encounters without breaking a sweat, much less the fact that they don't get feats and spells like they're used too.

Dealing with a combination of a world-wide infestation of an alien race and an the conspiracy to hide the impending impact of a meteor, the PC's are pulled into an investigation centering around the abduction of psychics. The plot wildly cycles in tone and intensity, and while there is a decent overall flow, it needs to be handled by a good GM, and not just pulled straight off the page.

Overall, a good story that actually makes a CoC campaign worthwhile. Just start the characters at level 3-4 and do some prep for each mission, else you'll be dealing with lots of annoyed players.
