All About Raising Children, by Helen Andelin

In one of the most crucial areas of human life, raising children, parents face many problems of varying degrees and far too many failures. The parents themselves may be excellent persons with the best of intentions and love for their children but they may not necessarily be good parents. This may be because they do not understand children or how to motivate them to good behavior. When parents face these perplexing problems, many of them feel without adequate guidance.

The purpose of this book is to teach parents how to reach success with their children. It explains the kind of persons parents must be , the home life they must provide, the care and devotion required and the close friendship they must build to reach this success. It teaches clear-cut methods of training them to be obedient and responsible, of developing their character and intellect to its hightet potential and of building a feeling of self-worth.

In raising children what should our aspirations be? First, we have an important duty to help them find happiness. To help them find this happiness we must help them succeed in important areas of dailing living, such as in their studies, their work, their personal achievements and their relationships.

To succeed in all areas we must build the child. We must build his character so he is responsible and honorable with a code for moral living that is solid and unchanging. We must train him to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, refined, well-manered and self-controlled. We must develop his mind so he can reason soundly, concentrate intently, exercise good judgment and make wise decisions. We must inspire him with the confidence to do what he sets out to do and develop his self-reliance so that he can take care of his own needs and stand on his own feet. We should cultivate his creativity so he is capable of oringinal thought and original work and fire him with ambition to live a useful life.

What would reaching these objectives do for your children? First, it would insure their success and happiness. This does not mean they would have a life free of problems, but they would have the inner resources to deal with these problems effectively. Instead of becoming burdens to society, as so many are, they would be the lifters and the builders.

Parents would benefit equally. They would be spared the anxiety, worry and usual distress parents experience when children are problems. They would feel pride and satisfaction as they see their children mature inot honorable, happy adults. They would begin to enjoy the rewards of their many years of dedication and sacrifice. Their children's success would be their success. The father's kingdom would be his family; the mothers glory would be the happiness of her children.

A generation of excellent children would have a profound effect upon society. We would eliminate vice, corruption, violence and msot of our social problems. Instead, our youth would begin to build our country in a positive way. Our children would be out country's greatest wealth. To quote the late religious leader, David O. McKay:

"Our country's most precious possession is not our vast acres of rangeland supporting flocks and herds, not our productive farms; not our forest, not our mines and oil wells producing fabulous wealth. Our country's greatest resource is our children."

What are the possiblities of reaching success with our children? Can we reach any potential we desire for them? The following theory makes this seem possible:

Sculpture

I took a piece of plastic clay
And idly fashioned it one day
And as my fingers pressed it, still
It moved and yielded to my will.

I came again when days went past;
The bit of clay was hard at last.
The form I gave it still it bore,
But I could change it nevermore!

I took a piece of living clay,
And gently pressed it day by day,
And molded with may power and art
A young child's soft and yielding heart.

I came again when years were gone;
It was a man I looked upon.
He still that early impress bore,
And I could fashion him no more.

Anon

Our power to shape a child is profound. We can mold his character, instill a faith in God, build self-worth and almost insure his success and happiness. However, a child is not quite as pliable as a piece of clay. He is born with inherent traits. Our success depends on us recognizing the uniqueness of his personality and guiding him in that direction. Aside from this we have great power to reach high goals, to bring out the best, noblest elements within him.

Success with children should include each one of them, not just the more promising ones. It would be a serious mistake to pass over a particular child because he is a real challenge. Some parents console themselves because they have other children who meet their expecations. I raising children we should not be satisfied with percentages. We must bring all of our children "into the fold."

The role of parents requires diligence, sacrifice and wise priorities, but we can reach success without sacrificing our entire lives to them. It is not wise, in fact, to confine ourselves entirely to our family life. The doting parents who lives only for his children is not a good parent. He must have a well-rounded life, other interests and make contributions outside the home.

It is possible for parents to have such a life of their own, even in a large family. When children are well-trained they become easy to manage. As they become dependable and responsible they become an asset and actually free their parents to do other things. Parents can enjoy the passing years instead of looking to the day their children are raised. Methods of reaching success are outlined in the four parts of this book.

From the Publisher

What motivates a child to want to behave well? Why do some children strive diligently to get their work done, to do their school assignments without being prodded and to follow parental instructions, while other children with just as loving parent are irresponsible, resist instruction and may even rebel against established teachings?

Why do some children have the confidence to succeed at everything they try while others, just as capable, are unsure of themselves and frequently fail. Within these pages are the keys to training children successfully. It explains methods of trining them to be obedient, responsible and honorable, of instilling confidence and worth and helping them succeed in all areas of daily living.

This is not the old heavy-handed control of former years, nor is it the permissive method recommended in recent times. Presented here is a method of applying firm and consistent discipline balanced with a sensitive understanding of the needs and feeling of children at each age level. It is not, however, a book only of methods. It explains what parents must be themselves, the home background they must provide and the close relationship they must build with their children if they are to influence their lives in a consistent, positive way.

Parents have the power to shape the child profoundly. We can eliminate child failures. We can bring out the finest, noblest elements within him and mold him to greatness. When proven methods are applied, success is assured.

By First Lady
You can buy this book for only $18 at the author's own website. Fascinating Womanhood was her first book and is Excellent.

I am appalled that people are trying to get $50 or more for an $18 book and want to make sure that others know it is available for less with a little more searching. Just search for the name of her first book and put a net behind it : ) I believe that Helen Andelin died in 2009 and her son has taken over the business.

Developing a Loving Mother's Heart
By Mrs. Wayne Hunter
This book is superb! Some of the many wonderful things that this book has taught me are that:

*Children are not born knowing how to be excellent adults, but that they must be taught, while they are children, how to be excellent people. This can be accomplished by cherishing them and acknowledging them as the gifts from God that they truly are.

*Parents have a great deal of responsibility when it comes to parenting; much more than many of us realize today.

*Home is truly where the heart is, and that home should be a warm, loving, positive place where every not only feels, but KNOWS that they are valuable, cherished, needed, and deeply, deeply loved.

Mrs. Andelin writes of many things in this book that pertain to parenting, such as: the home, teaching children, wholesome nutrition, cures for common ailments, nurturing, the responsibilities of husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers,

etc.

This is an EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT book that is written from one devoted wife and mother's heart and can truly help any wife and mother who seeks to develop her heart!

I didn't realize it was based on European examples. I didn't realize it was a textbook. I was looking for some more real world experiences, not so much theory. I got enough of that in College! This is my fault for not researching what I was purchasing a little better.

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER

"I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side―the Communist side―of the Iron Curtain." Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Ss shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Ss learned about beat poetry, rock 'n' roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilities―creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed.

By joining memory and history, Ss takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art. This title has Common Core connections.

The Wall is a 2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, a 2008 Caldecott Honor Book, a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year, the winner of the 2008 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, and a nominee for the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Born out of a question posed to Ss (Play, Mozart, Play!) by his children (Are you a settler, Dad?), the author pairs his remarkable artistry with journal entries, historical context and period photography to create a powerful account of his childhood in Cold War–era Prague. Dense, finely crosshatched black-and-white drawings of parades and red-flagged houses bear stark captions: Public displays of loyalty—compulsory. Children are encouraged to report on their families and fellow students. Parents learn to keep their opinions to themselves. Text along the bottom margin reveals young Ss's own experience: He didn't question what he was being told. Then he found out there were things he wasn't told. The secret police, with tidy suits and pig faces, intrude into every drawing, watching and listening. As Ss grows to manhood, Eastern Europe discovers the Beatles, and the Prague Spring of 1968 promises liberation and freedom. Instead, Soviet tanks roll in, returning the city to its previous restrictive climate. Ss rebels when possible, and in the book's final spreads, depicts himself in a bicycle, born aloft by wings made from his artwork, flying toward America and freedom, as the Berlin Wall crumbles below. Although some of Ss's other books have their source in his family's history, this one gives the adage write what you know biting significance. Younger readers have not yet had a graphic memoir with the power of Maus or Persepolis to call their own, but they do now. Ages 8-up. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In an autobiographical picture book that will remind many readers of Marjane Satrapi's memoir Persepolis (2003), Ss' latest, a powerful combination of graphic novel and picture book, is an account of his growing up in Czechoslovakia under Soviet rule. Written in several stands, the somewhat fragmented narrative never dilutes the impact of the boldly composed panels depicting scenes from Ss' infancy through young adulthood. Throughout, terrific design dramatizes the conflict between conformity and creative freedom, often through sparing use of color; in many cases, the dominant palette of black, white, and Communist red threatens to swallow up young Peter's freely doodled, riotously colored artwork. The panels heighten the emotional impact, as when Ss fleeing the secret police, emerges from one spread's claustrophobic, gridlike sequence into a borderless, double-page escape fantasy. Even as they side with Peter against fearsome forces beyond his control, younger readers may lose interest as the story moves past his childhood, and most will lack crucial historical context. But this will certainly grab teens—who will grasp both the history and the passionate, youthful rebellions against authority—as well as adults, many of whom will respond to the Cold War setting. Though the term picture book for older readers has been bandied about quite a bit, this memorable title is a true example. Mattson, Jennifer

Not only for children...
By Karel Kriz
Not only for the children:

Everybody is familiar with the saying "we take certain things, like freedom for granted". Peter Sis' book is about living in a country where this self-evident asset did not exist. Bear in mind, the author does not write about some high ideas whose proclamations would endanger the state. He is talking about criticizing government actions within a scope of a neighborly gossip - one cannot complain about the shortages of particular goods, telephones are bugged, certain books and films are banned, press, art and whole culture are censored, foreign radios are jammed, letters are opened and censored, informers are rewarded for snooping etc. "Yes", some readers might say "we already read about it so many times, and the cold war ended seventeen years ago". Of course, books were written about it and some adults even read it, but what is new about this book is its target. It is aimed for the children. The author, a world famous children books illustrator was born in former Czechoslovakia under the Communist regime and he presents the way of life during that terrible period as seen with the children eyes. The book is illustrated with the child -like, but artistic drawings. One might classify it as Comics for the gifted children. Since the facts are refined by the child lenses, I would recommend to read it together with the parents and I am certain that both sides will benefit. Specifically two chapters titled "From my Journals", where the necessary historical ,political events are recorded, could be fully understood only by the High school and higher up students. Since I lived under that system during my adolescence years I could testify for the accuracy of the facts with the understandable omission of the gruesome show trials, where the innocent people were sent to gallows or to heavy imprisonment in the concentration camps. We are aware that it is for the children and we hope that they will learn from it more than our generation did from the books for the adults.
I could voice only one critical comment. The author did not explain how this system came to power as experienced by a common man. Especially the children are prone to follow the logic of the "good guys" against the "bad ones". In general it followed the same path as any would-be totalitarian system. The Communist Party did not proclaim its final goal: total power. In the transient democratic period it promised to the masses essentially a heaven on the earth, for any problem, however complicated offered simple solution, in other words they pretended to be "good guys" and they succeeded... Once in power the Communists simply did not allow any free elections. Of course they were helped by the threat of the Soviet invasion, which had to come anyway many years later. This way presented lesson could help better to-days children to orient in the politics around us.
I strongly recommend this book as an educational and entertaining medium for the whole family.

Totalitarian regimes make for good children's books. They just do. What could be more inherently exciting plot-wise than a world in which you never know who to trust? Where children report parents to the police and freedom and creativity are stifled under the boots of oppressors? That makes for good copy. This year alone we've the Cultural Revolution book, Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party by Ying Chang Compestine and the much discussed Peter Sis title, "The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain." "The Wall" brings together your standard gorgeous Peter Sis imagery with content that is sure to cause debate and interest. Though it's not a book I would necessarily site as a personal favorite and that I have a couple issues with, I appreciate that Sis has created something worth discussing with kids, teens, and adults alike.

He was born at the very beginning of The Cold War in Czechoslovakia. A kid with a penchant for drawing, right from the start, we watch as the growth of young Sis is paralleled with the rise of fear in his nation. Peter draws at home and at school and alongside this story we read of the compulsory and discouraged actions both required and prohibited by the government. The drawn sections are broken up by journal entries Sis wrote at the time, reflecting his beliefs and dreams. With the late 1960s, Sis was entranced by Western influences, a dangerous thing at the time. Near the end, Sis dreams of flying away above it all with wings made out of his art. His escape is cemented by the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and an Afterword explains how he left and what Prague is like now.

This is certainly an earnest book. Not humorless, but certainly gung ho in its love of all things American. It's difficult to criticize a book on that basis since what Sis has gone through is unlike anything I could understand or appreciate. The book feels like a cathartic release but it lacks distance. There's a danger of the author being almost too close to his material. Compare "The Wall" to Persepolis and you see the difference. The content is similar but the approach varies wildly. Satrapi is part of the story and, at the same time, removed. She doesn't simplify the story into strict terms, but instead allows the audience to draw their own conclusions based on the information she presents to you. I just don't feel that Sis has done that here. He tells you what to think of the subject matter and when to think it. For example, without batting an eye he suggests that Europe is said to contain, "Truth. Integrity. Honor. Liberty. Virtue," etc. while on the East side of the Berlin Wall there is only, "Envy. Stupidity. Lies," and so forth. He has every right to do so, particularly when you consider that this may be an image of what the young Sis believed lay in the West rather than what was really there. Unfortunately, as it currently stands, the image suggests that the readership not draw their own conclusions and accept the "Virtue" on top of Western Europe and the "Envy" on top of the Eastern half. Even the oppressors are featured with pig noses rather than looking like average everyday joes. How much more interesting it might have been to make the bad guys as human as the good guys. How much more interesting if, like Satrapi, he'd been able to take that one baby step backwards and not tell us what to believe.

Audience has never bothered Peter Sis, so I doubt we should let it bother us either. To my mind, this book is ideal for high school students. You can teach and teach the Cold War to them all day, but unless they get a little primary source material presented in an interesting fashion, who knows how much information they're actually going to take in? Kids might like this book, but they probably won't be able to understand the journal passages. I appreciated that Sis did find a way to make the book kid-friendly, though. At the bottom of each page are sections that can be read to kids and that make sense of young Peter's life. It's only when you read the captions that pop up on the sides of these pictures that you understand the background behind such innocuous statements as, "He didn't question what he was being told."

The journal passages were especially interesting to me. I liked the photographs of young Sis (particularly the hunky mop top with the raised eyebrow) and the glimpses of his art surrounding these passages. It was particularly interesting that Sis' professor at the Academy of Applied Arts was Adolf Hoffmeister who wrote "Brundibar". I wonder now how Sis felt about the Tony Kushner/Maurice Sendak picture book version of that tale. The information and details found in these journals just about make up for the lack of a Bibliography in the back. I suppose that since this is a first-hand account, Sis didn't need to scout out kid-friendly sources to give some context to his lesson. Still, that means that we're being told what to think about these events without a secondary source of any sort. It would be nice if kids were able to learn more about these times on their own, say, with a list of useful websites or books on the subject. I've been discussing whether or not Bibliographies are necessary in picture books. Maybe not always, but if I'm going to recommend this book to teens as well as kids as a bit of non-fiction (and the Dewey call number is 943.704092, after all) then I'm going to want some secondary sources.

The comic book bloggers have been calling this book a picture book graphic novel, and have claimed "The Wall" as their own. It's a very interesting take. At first glance I just assumed that this story was similar in its layout and structure to the Galileo and Darwin books Sis has put out before. And it is, in a way, but then I took a closer look at the structure. Though this is not the case on every page, the art is consistently broken into panels. There aren't speech balloons or much in the way of text integrated within the pictures. Because the words surround the pictures, the eye has something to dance between. The tiny dot style Sis employs here works beautifully within the context of the story. Colors stand out against a black and white background. With the exception of the color red, nothing in Prague is allowed to be colorful. Only Westernized objects and ideas appear in anything but pen and ink. The two-page multi-colored spread of the Spring of 1968 (shown here) stands in sharp contrast to the red-infused earlier spread of Stalinism and its ilk.

Sis hasn't won a Caldecott Award proper quite yet. He's been honored for Tibet Through the Red Box and Starry Messenger (not The Tree of Life, bizarrely) but "The Wall" is bound to be the best bet he's had yet. It's a beautiful book and no one is going to contest that. Shoot, it's already gotten at least four starred reviews in professional journals and is bound to garner some more. Come award season it'll sweep the nominations and everyone will get to hear a lovely Peter Sis speech (he's a very good public speaker) and it will all be lovely and droll. I don't object to the book winning, but I do wish the heavy hand guiding it could have trusted the audience a little and not spelled out its message quite so blatantly (i.e. "America to the rescue"). It's quite an accomplishment but one that could have stood a drop of irony in the mix.

This wonderful book manages to be both creative and insightful, documenting life behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War in words and graphic design. Peter Sis's use of color in his intricate illustrations highlights and enhances the matter-of-fact language of his text. He has managed to create a journal, biography, and social/historical commentary that is fascinating reading for older children and adults alike.

The Renaissance, by Paul Johnson

The development of the first universities from the 12th century onwards, growing wealth and patronage in certain cities, and above all the invention of printing and cheap paper, provided essential conditions for the Renaissance. And it was in literature and scholarship that it began, in humanism, individualism and scepticism and the rebirth of classical culture that loosened the Church's iron grip on visual art - Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarch, even Chaucer playing an important role. Paul Johnson tells the story, in turn, of Renaissance literature, sculpture, building and painting. Despite the critical importance of inventions outside Italy - printing in Germany and oil painting in Holland - he locates the Renaissance firmly in Italy and in Florence above all, between 1400 and 1560. He stresses the cultural enthusiasm of the city-state rulers such as the Medici in Florence, the Visconti and Sforza in Milan, Montefeltro in Urbino, the Gonzaga in Mantua and, not least, the Papacy in Rome. There are memorable sketches of the key figures - the frugal and shockingly original Donatello, the intensely competitive Verrochio, the awesome Michelangelo, the delicacy of Giovanni Bellini, the disorganised Leonardo, the affable and reliable Raphael. The final part of the book charts the spread and decline of the Renaissance, as the Catholic Church repositioned itself to counter the Reformation which the Renaissance had itself helped to produce.

From Publishers Weekly
Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

From Booklist
Author David Foster Wallace once observed that, as a filmmaker, David Lynch seems to care more about getting inside the heads of his viewers than about communicating a particular message to them once he's inside. With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. A longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, a set of meditation practices popular in the 1960s, Lynch is primarily interested in communicating to readers the powerful creative vitality that he has tapped through meditation. In 85 brief, airy chapters--many koanlike and some only a sentence or two long--Lynch discusses the techniques with which he expands his consciousness, catches ideas, and gives form to abstraction. (It's not all lofty stuff: milkshakes are, it turns out, a key vehicle for creativity.) In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness. Brendan Driscoll

Review
“The quirky helmer known for Boy Scout demeanor and twisted tales shares his creative vision in a surprisingly gentle tome informed by the underlying teachings of Transcendental Meditation. But don’t worry: David Lynch, one-time creator of “The Angriest Dog in the World” comic, keeps the proselytizing to a minimum. He addresses topics ranging from working with wood (for it) to director’s commentaries (against) in deceptively simple, yet ultimately affirming, chapters. There’s much for fans and aspiring filmmakers to enjoy.”
—Variety

“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper," says David Lynch the idiosyncratic filmmaker whose creations include Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the cult TV classic, Twin Peaks. He claims that he has savored the pleasures of diving deep thanks to a 33-year practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He describes the fun of gathering what he calls "firewood" (all kinds of ideas and things for a film), the joy he takes in seeing an aging building or a rusted bridge, and the respect he has for Fellini and Kubrick. Lynch loves making movies and diving deep, and this testament bears witness to both loves.”
—Spirituality & Practice

“In Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, David Lynch puts aside his filmic quest to get inside the viewer’s head and lets them instead inside his, an invitation almost as rare as a ticket to fiction’s Wonka Chocolate Factory, and possibly just as out of this world. Catching the Big Fish is a blend of thoughts and themes, sometimes random like a stream of consciousness, or — the analogy he personally prefers for creativity — casting a hook into a bottomless sea. The book melds biography, film analysis, philosophy and spirituality with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, while incorporatinga narrative ofthe author’s passion for charting the world of dreams and ideas and rendering them unto action.”

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.
By hondast1100
I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film
By Frank
This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

An evening with David Lynch
By Edward scott brindley
I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Should have stopped at the 3rd Edition
By Brent Dombrowski
I had the displeasure of using this book for a graduate level course on Software Engineering. We did not use the web site or the online learning tools associated with the book. The professor did use the author's supplied slides.

Pros:
* Very nice UML diagrams.
* Might get recycled into toilet paper.

Cons:
* Very repetitive. I lost track of how many times a legacy system was defined. This made reading this book extremely boring.
* Despite the 2011 copyright date, the material is dated. Computers are still single core, smart phones aren't on the scene, and Sun still owns Java (cue Oracle lawyers).
* The back of the book claims it has been updated with new material on open source development. That new material consists of a few paragraphs on the legal issues of incorporating open source into a traditional project. There is nothing on developing software for open source.
* The power point slides that accompany the book have problems with the graphics starting about chapter 5. The image quality of the embedded diagrams takes a nose dive and the images are barely readable.
* The topics covered seemed very shallow. I'm not sure you'll get much more out of this book then you would reading through wikipedia articles.
* The author has a habit of using acronyms without defining them. COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) was used for several chapters before it was spelled out.
* Electronic version (Kindle) has random spaces removed (as noted by other reviewers)
* The project schedule charts presented are Gantt charts. It seems the author has never heard of Gantt and just refers to them as bar charts.
* Some diagrams are mislabeled.
* There was at least one sample XML file that was used for a few problems. The XML was broken making it that much harder to figure out the problems.

If you are a professor looking for a book on this topic, please spare your students and find another book.
If you want almost the whole book for free, download the slides. Chapter 4 alone is 82 slides (29 pages in the book).

The only thing I'd like to get out of this book (besides my money back) is how the diagrams were created. I haven't found anything that comes close to the ones in the book.

Why do you need this book, or not?
By Jason
This book has such a poor rating in Amazon, and most of the reviewers feel the book lacks examples. It IS true.
However, I believe the author is NOT trying to provide the readers every detail about everything he is talking about. If I would teach a SWE course, the book would take me 2-4 semesters to cover. Just think about it, I can write a series of books talking about testing alone, about architecture alone, about XP in Agile alone, about......... This is not the book that give you the whole detail. However, why do so many professors choose this book as their textbooks(the 9th edition at least shows something)? Because it DOES provide a great overview about the key problems in SWE and most of the popular solutions to those problems. Also, it is the professor's discussion in the lectures and the labs that are more important to students who really wanna learn more about SWE. You MUST do projects, coding, putting those theories to practice to know that SWE really is. Even if the author put thousands of questions on the back of the book won't help you learn SWE.

My advice:
Get the big picture from the book, get the detail from the professors and other good resources. Learn what SWE really is through projects.

To those who wanna learn SWE by yourself:
ok......I have to say that is really tough. If you are in a company, you may don't have a lot of time, otherwise you may don't have project opportunity. As this book contains a lot of information while not that much details, it will drive you crazy sometime. So, this book only worth 2.5 stars for you :< the 2.5 stars are for you to grasp the big picture.

Comments from the author
By Ian Sommerville
As the books author, I'd like to say a couple of things about some of the adverse comments here:

1. Repetition. Yes - there is repetition and this is not accidental. The book is not designed to be read cover to cover and it is not, in my view, good for the reader to expect them to simply refer them to somewhere else in the book when a concept is introduced.

2. Dullness - some aspects of software engineering are dull. I have always hated testing and I can think of no way of making software testing and quality management interesting. But they are still essential for professionals - this isn't supposed to be about entertainment. All professions have dull aspects to them and it would be a disservice to readers to pretend that this isn't the case.

I think I have to give a rating for this so, for fairness, I've rated it the average shown.

Bobbie Kalman's EXPLORE EARTH'S FIVE OCEANS and EXPLORE EARTH'S SEVEN CONTINENTS each pack in 32 pages of detail for grades 2-3, using larger print, eye-catching color photos, and photos of kids around the world to cement geography details. What WAS SHE THINKING?!
By Claire
Having read most of Jill Mansell's books I was sure this would be another winner so I bought it as soon as I saw it on the bookshelves without even bothering to read any review. After all, the previous 7 or 8 books I had read by her were all almost excellent so I was sure this would be too. And it was so thick too! Something I usually love about good books...lots of hours to read....HOW WRONG I WAS!!!! What was Ms Mansell thinking when she actually wrote this book? I actually had to check more than once the name of the author as I read it because it is sooo different from her usual light, fun, deeply insightful style! At some points I almost felt that I had bought a one of those romance books with lots of sex instead of a fun, light hearted chick flick. So many sex scenes. So many beautiful, sexy, characters it's like reading the script of a soap opera! Usually I like all of Ms Manell's characters because they are so normal and their stories so familiar to our day to day life that I feel as if she has read my mind. BUT THIS!!!! WHAT IS THIS? So many bautiful men and women, sex, tragedies, everything abounds - like in a cheap soap opera and I really couldn't like a single character in this long, overdrawn melodrama. I found myself sleeping while reading it, changing it for other books, praying it would soon be over (you see I prefer to finish a book when I pay for it and I did not get this book cheaply). Finally after the many tragedies I realized the book was almost finished and I found myself skipping the last few pages because, frankly, I couldn't care less anymore to what happened to the main characters. (And there are so many I started getting confused after a while) If you have never read a book by Jill Mansell don't start with this one as it will put you off of her forever! Try her other ones, they all are much better than this garbage. Sorry Ms Mansell. I hope this is just one mistake in your otherwise great writing career. I will not lose my faith in you certainly, but from now on, I'll make sure to read some reviews before I buy another one of your books.

Disapponted!
By Bookhooked
I've read (and enjoyed) many books by this author, but this one was so annoying I couldn't finish it, it was waaaay too long, a boring story about nothing, full of (directly translated from a norwegian saying) "house-wife-porn". Don't buy it, read one of the other novels instead!

Not Jill Mansell's best
By A Customer
Having just finished Nadia Knows Best, my first Jill Mansell book, I was desperate to read another of her novels, expecting to love it as much as the first. I was very disappointed. This book is very predictable and unbelievably sappy and cheezy. The main character is so unrealistically "perfect" that I hated her and found myself cheering when anything bad happened to her. The other characters are no less hateful and sleazy. If you choose to read a Jill Mansell novel, I highly recommend avoiding Fast Friends.
