Bloomsbury Children's Books are also publishing his first poetry collection in October 1998, establishing Faustin as a Bloomsbury author across the board. Faustin spends much time in schools and libraries story-telling, and is also Library Buyer for Enfield. He lives in North London. Nice book touching on themes of bullying, empathy, sharing and sense of community. We read this in my 1st grade class near the beginning of the year to promote developing a sense of community and everyone's responsibility to take care of our classroom resources, materials, etc. The students naturally extended the idea to the greater community around us.

About the Author
Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales. In 1953, he published the best-selling story collection Someone Like You and married actress Patricia Neil. He published the popular book James and the Giant Peach in 1961. In 1964, he released another highly successfuly work, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was later adapted for two films. Over his decades-long writing career, Dahl wrote 19 children's books. He died on November 23, 1990, in Oxford, England.


Quentin Blake is Children's Laureate of Great Britain, has won the Kate Greenaway Medal, and is the author and/or illustrator of many books. He lives in London, England.

Matilda - French Edition.

Okay, the only reason I give it a 3 star is because it was more difficult to read than anticipated. I'm back to studying and reading French for the first time in many years. I should have remembered Roald Dahl's love of wordplay - which is what makes his books so amusing. Problem is, that funny wordplay translated into funny wordplay in French is quite a challenge. I was constantly looking up words and eventually resorted to getting the English edition as well and reading the two side by side. Yup, wimping out I know but I was getting too frustrated.

Don't miss this incredible book.I didn't want to put it down.It made me feel as if I were Matilda myself.I loved this book because Matilda is clever.For example,when Matilda put SuperGlue in her father's hat. I recommend this book to anyone who likes funny books and mysteries.Because you'll get a kick out of this one.

This is the kind of book that lets you know your not the only person out there not understood. It comes from the heart and tells the truth about some kids and it's a very good book. I'd recommend this book to any person of all ages. It's the kind of book that takes you along the hand and it's like your right there in the book. Roald Dahl is a very,good writer and Quentin Blake is right there with him when it comes to art.

Mila, the otherworldly "dolphin girl," is enthusiastic to please, learning to speak words and write her thoughts on a computer, but gradually she understands that she is a prisoner "in the net of humans." She begins to lose ground, regressing physically, begging to be returned to the sea. Hesse's skill is in making readers believe in this wise, intuitive feral child. Mila's longing for the sea and her dolphin family is so achingly palpable that her return is equally believable. Her story is told in her own perfectly sustained voice: the clear and simple, but profound and poetic language of a "foreigner" with a keen mind and resonant spirit but limited vocabulary. The young teen, called Mila for miracle, and thought lost at sea years earlier, was raised by dolphins until her discovery. Now she begins her acculturation back into the world of humans, and the scene shifts to a special school-hospital in Boston, where doctors study and observe their fascinating find. Mila tells the story, speaking in simple, halting prose in the opening chapters as befits her own feelings of strangeness in a radically new environment. A quick study, she rapidly figures out human civilization and makes great strides in language and music. Being human disappoints her, however, and she feels longingly that "I have been coming back to the sea from the moment I left it." Return she does, though in a somewhat unconvincing reunion with her sea family at the end. The book works largely because of Mila's sharp observations, the stranger-in-a-strange-and scenario, and the incredible notion of the dolphin family, all of which will interest elementary and middle-school readers. To each his own...

This work of fiction was purchased as a requirement for a public school assignment. It tells of a girl that is found on a deserted island, that has been "raised" by dolphins. Her rescuers unsuccessfully attempt to assimilate her into human society; only to fail, give up, and send her back to the island to live with the dolphins (spoiler alert).

Pros+ The printing was sharp and clear, and the pages were evenly cut and well bound.

Cons- The contents were lacking. My teenage son found this story and its conclusion to be almost as ridiculous, as I found his requirement to read it.

One star, since the printer did his job well.
Nothing against fiction; but a history book would have been a much better use of his mind. Save your money, and find a good read elsewhere.

The Real Thing

I loved this book and I have read, quite literally, hundreds of book focusing on the philosophy of the self, Buddhism, Taoism, and Advaita. This one, finally, lays to rest the myth of enlightenment and brings the restless soul to peace. Life is not a matter of searching for an ever-ellusive happiness. Rather, as Brown says, it is about ending this search through integration - that true peace is a consequence of living the life of our unchanging self, what he calls the vibrational self. This is a MUST read for anyone "entranced" with such a search.
Alas, I do have just one complaint....sometimes the writing becomes a little dense and convoluted and its potential for clarity suffers as a result. The positive side of this problem is that it forces the reader to concentrate that much harder to find the gems of insight embedded deeply within the test.
Very, very strongly recommended.

As a stand alone or a companion to Michael Brown's "The Presence Process," this book is a jewel box of precious gems. "The Presence Process" is as important a discovery as Genpo Roshi's Big Mind, and if Ken Wilber is the Einstein of consciousness, Michael Brown is the Einstein of emotional body awareness. "Alchemy of the Heart" provides substantial inner nutrition for anyone undertaking the destinationless journey of Self discovery.

True Alchemy, Priceless

I only read half of this book... why? Because I forgot it in the seat pocket when I flew across the Atlantic... And you know what? When I realized this I was so HAPPY... Why? Because I knew that someone was going to find it and get to read it and I felt nothing but joy. I came to this site so I could buy it and finish the last half, but I already know enough about this book and this author ..( I'm also reading and doing his Presence Process)... to rate it 5 stars... I'd give it 11 if there were 10.

It's so exciting to be finding that the path to a place I'd once visited temporarily, as if on a vacation, was actually a place that I can now live. The only thing more exciting than that is wanting to share this discovery with so many others... I'm risking becoming a pain on Facebook talking about this author...

He is full of Humility and backs away from any notion that he or anyone can do unto any other. This is a Process that only you can take on for you. Michael Brown is a guide for you to enable your own journey to a place that is so incredible you'll be awed and probably even suffer a wave of fear that you might ever loose what you gained it is so precious. Thankfully he teaches us how to transcend that kind of fear so we are able to recover from it! If you want to gift people you love... his books would be a way to accomplish that and, if they are not ready to read them, they might give them to someone who would... they are truly a gift to the world.

The "bible" for South America

I use this book for reference, as it is in its 90th year and has a lot of information (in a very small font, so be warned). I use this as my planning "bible" and buy occasional guides for specific countries as I need them to fill in further. As it covers from backpacker to business, it's convenient and economical.

You need very good eyesight or a large magnifier, but it's a very good book.

Content is superb, but either have very good eyesight or a large magnifier. I have 20/30 eyesight and either read only a page or two at a time, use a magnifier, or copy and enlarge pages using my all-in-one printer.

This book helped us immensely during a 4 month motorcycle trip through South America. It is especially helpful at borders, and to find nice, affordable hostels and lodging. We were surprised that it had information in even the smallest villages, sometimes even with city maps. Highly recommended.

Hubert Selby, Jr. was born in Brooklyn in 1928. Last Exit to Brooklyn, his first novel, was originally published in 1964. He has since written five other novels, The Room, The Demon, Requiem for a Dream, and The Willow Tree, and a collection of short stories, Song of the Silent Snow. Mr. Selby lives in Los Angeles.

About the Author
Hubert Selby Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York. After leaving school he went to sea until illness forced him to leave the Merchant Marines. He began publishing stories in the 1950s, but it was the appearance of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN in the mid-sixties that brought him widespread recognition. On British publication the book was prosecuted for obscenity, but won its protracted court case on appeal. Hubert Selby's other works are THE ROOM (1971), THE DEMON (1973), REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (1978) and SONG OF THE SILENT SNOW (1986). He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Bennies, bums and beatings

"Last Exit" is now around 60 years old. It's a inter-related group of short stories dealing with the "underclass" of 1950s Brooklyn, New York. It clearly stands the test of time and, to use a hackneyed term, it's a "classic" in the tradition of Burroughs, Bukowski, Ginsberg and other more famous authors of the era.

"Exit" divides into three inter-related parts. Part 1 deals with a group of neighborhood toughs, all unemployed, bored and both by habit and temperment, looking for trouble. They hang out at a local dive, a diner called, "the Greeks" (no punctuation, per the author). They avail themselves of the first opportunity for violence and seriously beat a soldier who, in their perception, slighted a local "floozy". After administering a serious beating and in true sociopathic fashion, Vinnie and friends cavalierly return to the diner and their coffee. During the course of the evening and later on, they consume prodigious quantities of gin, benzedrine (legal at the time) and weed. They berate gays but happily and unabashedly party with transvestites. In Part 2, "Strike" focus shifts to a local machine shop and the union shop steward, Harry, who has some problems of his own. He's a lazy, belligerent and foul-mouthed bum whose "work ethic" leaves something to be desired from the perspective of the union (where his fealty outweighs his shortcomings), from the machinists themselves (where his grating and affected "hail fellow, well met" approach and incessant bragging further compromise his strong-arm techniques) to the company executives who provoke a strike in an effort to rid themselves of an offensive parasite. As the strike progresses, the thugs from Part 1 leach food and alcohol from the shop steward, introduce him to the demi-monde of gay sex and eventually beat him to a bloody pulp after he attempts to seduce a neighborhood boy. Part 3 ("Landsend") is a series of vignettes featuring residents of "the Project". This section is the strongest of the three, as it perfectly captures the mood, language, mores and attitudes of a cross-section of lower-class America, both then and now. It is reminiscent in it's fealty to language and atmosphere of Roth's, "Call it Sleep", an acknowledged masterpiece set in turn-of-the (20th)-century Jewish tenement culture. Marlon Brando in the film, "On the Waterfront" also comes to mind.

It's likely that Hubert Selby, Jr.'s perspectives were well informed by his own lifestyle which blended heroin, alcohol and a singularly avant guarde/bohemian lifestyle, especially for the time. His novels were all successful ("Exit" was filmed). Due to the startlingly explicit depictions of both homosexual and heterosexual sex, parts of which were (and remain) disquieting (e.g., the gang rape concluding Part 1), "Exit" was banned as "obscene". By current standards, it remains graphic and probably (given emerging Victorian sensibilities wrapped in sharp, cool clothes and covered with currently fashionable jargon) would warrant a "trigger warning" at certain American colleges and universities. One wonders if Selby could land a university job in the present era (he served as USC writing faculty).

"Exit" is a strong, compelling, unaffected, authentic and vibrant piece of literature. It's clear depictions of 1950s Brooklyn, coupled with the frenetic writing style (idiosyncratic punctuation, reproduced in this edition, reflecting Selby's rush to convey his typewritten thoughts to paper as rapidly as possible). It's more honest than Kerouac, less contrived than Burroughs and as insightful as Bowles. What more can you ask?

Gritty view of mid-century Brooklyn

A difficult but somehow hopeful book. The gritty nature of NYC working class (or lower) people in the forties/fifties is uncomfortable at times. But the acceptance of drag queens and others on the fringe is wonderful. Stylistically, sometimes the book felt like a novel, sometimes like a Beatnik rap, and sometimes like poetry. Not a book to read fast, but a book that keeps you thinking.

One of a kind read

This is the second book of Selby's I've enjoyed, Requiem of a Dream was the first. I will continue to order his works, as I consider him one of the best American writers, The Room more than likely will be next. He is a very talented writer who prefers writing about characters with major character flaws, yet instead of condesending them, he allows us to see what drives them to do the things that ultimately destroy their lives, thus allowing the reader to see the tragedy and feel empathy towards them. He writes in a musical fashion, something of a cross between poetry and a typist's prose with minimal punctuation to get in the way (although that takes some getting used to).

Last Exit concerns itself with the downward spiraling lives of various "lowlifes" in NYC during the 50's. There's a transvestite drug abuser named Georgette who is in love with Vinnie, a street thug who only uses him for drugs and money. Tralala is a vain street hustler and hooker who blows her chance at a decent life, and wastes away in bars searching for the next john that will make her feel like she is as beautiful as she imagines herself again, and Harry is an unhappily married and disturbed union strike leader. During the story he discovers he is a homosexual and finds happiness in various relationships with the drag queens of a local bar. However, after the strike is over and he is broke, he is shunned by the group and destroys himself by doing a terrible thing trying to regain his lost fulfillment. Also there are quite a few short stories at the end, following various characters through their daily routines, personally my favorite part of the novel.

The stories intertwine at times, and are very graphic in language, sex, and violence, not allowing the reader to look away even in the darkest sections of the novel. It was released in 1964, and was banned in Britian for a couple of years, labeled by the government as "obscene". However, if you can look past the subject matter and read this book, I can pretty much guarantee you will grow as a person. And anyone who enjoys classic American literature and/or a good story, albeit not always with a happy ending, will find much to love here.
