OUTDATED MOSTLY USELESS MATERIAL

Chess on the internet has changed so much and so fast since this book has been published in 2002 it has made this book useless. I have sold many chess books and received this book in a lot of books I purchased about 10 years ago. The book was not very helpful to me. You don't need this book to figure out How & Where to play chess. You certainly don't need this to search for any specific chess issue, games, history, analysis etc. When I went to re-sell this book on the net I felt embarrassed to ask even $1 for it. So I just tossed it in the trash - I don't have it anymore to give specifics, but this book was probably out dated by the time it went for sale. Save your money for something that can help you improve your chess.

interesting book

an interesting book with some good details. It is hurt by no true introduction and conclusion. it doesn't seem the author has a point to write this, it is just words on a page. The repetitive nature of him stating his claims also makes it annoying to read.
that aside i did enjoy reading some new information on something i had no idea "happened". It's not a long book so its worth a read.

Dr. Farrokh Langdana is a professor in the Finance/Economics Department at Rutgers Business School (RBS), New Jersey.� In addition to this volume, he is the author of four other books including the textbook, Macroeconomic Policy: Demystifying Monetary and Fiscal Policy, and numerous research articles.� Dr. Langdana is currently the Director of the globally ranked Executive MBA program at RBS.� He has taught Macroeconomic Policy and International Trade extensively at RBS and around the world.� Dr. Langdana is the recipient of over thirty teaching and research awards including the Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching (Rutgers University’s highest teaching award).�

Peter T. Murphy

Peter T. Murphy is an operating partner with Dubilier & Company, and currently serves as President and C.E.O. of DC Safety, a leading supplier to the automotive industry.� Mr. Murphy has been a leader and pioneer in international business for 25 years, operating in dozens of countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.� His expertise in strategy and value creation is complemented by hands-on experience across a range of business disciplines.� He is a graduate of Iona College and earned his MBA with a concentration in Finance from Rutgers Business School.

Burdekin), the textbook, Macroeconomic Policy: Demystifying Monetary and Fiscal Policy, now in its second edition, and several publications pertaining to macroeconomic policy and macro-experimentation.

Dr.�Langdana is currently the Director of the globally ranked Executive MBA (EMBA) program at Rutgers Business School.� He teaches Macroeconomic Policy as well as International Trade and Global Macroeconomics in the�EMBA program as well as in the full-time and Flex MBA programs at Rutgers Business School.

I had the opportunity to read the manuscript of this book while taking the lecture taught by the author during the last semester of my MBA program. It's a hard hitting book that provided me with an understanding of the classical trade theorem/policy and its real world implications without going through the savagery of complex mathematical equations. A practical and insightful must-read for anyone genuinely interested in global business, policy, and politics. Langdana and Murphy dispel common misconceptions about products being "made-in-the-USA" - whether this is a fact and, more importantly, whether it should be a goal. They segue seemlessly from microeconomic principles about globalized firms and industries to a far-reaching macroeconomic analyses that spans countries, their capital flows and their exchange rate dynamics. The unique real-world "articles" in each chapter truly bring the theory to life. This book is a thoughtful and well-articulated explanation of issues that are integral to a thriving economy.

Excellent Introduction to Global Trade Issues

Langdana and Murphy have provided an excellent, detailed introduction to the topic of global trade, useful for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in business and economics. Through excellent use of graphs and examples they present the compelling case that global trade is not a zero/sum game. Rather, the "pie gets bigger" for everyone as trade barriers are lifted. This text was used very successfully in the executive MBA program at Rutgers, and I would unhesitantly recommend it for use by others.

Newer version available and cheaper!

This is a great book. However, please be aware the 16th ed is out there already and cheaper than this old version. Impressive collection of difficult questions

As someone who has sat for quite a few grillings in banking, management consulting, engineering, and VC interviews, I have received my share of tough interview questions. Moreover, I have taken a sizable number of brain teasers and IQ tests over the decades. This collection, which are designed for someone with a slightly different job description, really does include some tough questions. In fact, younger job candidates who have sub-superstar credentials should thoroughly try all the problems in this book early in their job search process.

Far too often, second-tier individuals get roped into bogus trader jobs at third-tier firms, where turnover is worse than at McDonald's and the income opportunity is poor. In other words, in this "winner takes all" economy, it might be worth it to see if you are smart enough to answer such difficult questions before pursuing certain quant and trading jobs.

Essential preparation for finance interviews

This is a must for people heading to trading firms, banks, or other financial service firms for interviews. These firms typically scout for a few skill sets. One is general brainpower, as hard as that is to measure. Another is the more difficult math in finance, derivatives pricing. This book covers both in a quick and easy format to let you see where you stand. Moreover, if you can master the material in the book then you will be ready for the majority of an entry-level interview.

The derivatives questions cover "plain vanilla" options pricing and some basic understanding of the principles behind the formulas. Most firms want to see that you know the terms in the Black-Scholes equation and how options prices depend on things.

The earlier part of the book I find even more impressive. It's a nearly comprehensive list of the brain-teasers you get in this process. That's where the employer is trying to measure general brainpower. Of course, a brain-teaser you haven't seen before will give you pause and maybe elude you in the stress of an interview. But after reading this book the answers could be at the ready. The set of brain-teasers through history is actually very small. That is after distilling all the variations on them such as whether you are weighing coins or cannonballs and such. And that set of puzzles, questions designed to test basic reasoning and logic, without depending on formal math, is well covered in this book. In fact, in many interviews I have only encountered one single brain-teaser that is not in this book (and it's not a very good one either).

Finally Mr. Crack inserts notes on the culture of banks which might scare or excite the prospective employee. This book is both good orientation and preparation for starting a career in finance.

It is still relevant and helpful ten years later. That said, there is one area this book totally misses (because of what's happened in the past ten years). That is programming questions. Especially in the past couple of years most interviews will look for some software development skill on top of the general brainpower and command of financial derivatives. Tests on C++ or OOP are common these days. For that material you have to look elsewhere.

Mixed feelings

Some of the case examples seem a bit too personal and almost vindictive.

In one case the author sites "a personal friend, a dental school student" who "called once or twice a day to unload his serious emotional problems on me." And then the author goes on to describe how that man broke off his friendship with him.

On the very next page he cites his daughter, Carley, who "used to go to the medical school cafeteria dressed in surgical scrubs to pretend she was a doctor (weird, but no weirder than the crush she developed on her dermatologist, whom she used to follow around with a girlfriend, who was also in love with him)." Actual quote... and it goes on to trash her new husband whom he calls "a schizophrenic stalker" as well as her husband's "crazy family." Which all comes across as a bit petty.

And then there's the case example from "A negative "review" on Amazon.com" where he quotes parts of a review (not the whole review) where a woman calls another of the author's books "The most redundant book I have ever read...very superficial...some sections...are so superficial he should have left them out altogether..." etc... This is to show that "avoidants" are judgmental and prone to angry outbursts... This along with a heading of another of her reviews, "This flashlight sucks."

I found it really affected my view of the author's credibility. I sometimes found myself psycho-analysing him instead of me.

There are some great things about the book, though.

The author lays out pretty much all the information anyone could want about Avoidant Personality Disorders, including diagnosing and treatment. There were some great insights into my own personal issues, especially in the area of relationships, as well as some good ways to chip away at it the disorder. But it's a very daunting thing to attempt or even to rationalize for an avoidant. It would be much easier for an already fickle, judgmental group of people to accept this material without some of the author's added personal drama.

some useful (overpriced) information

This book isn't what I expected. I will say that there are definitely some helpful insights in here, but the majority of the book is just one long case study after another (after another), and an overview of the different kinds of therapies used to treat AVPD. There really isn't much new information, just elaborations on the same old stuff that anyone who is familiar with the disorder would already know. In some instances it just feels like he's reaching for material. For example, he includes a (negative) Amazon.com customer review of his last book, and spends a page and a half discussing how the reviewer's negative response to his book showed that the reviewer was exhibiting anger-related avoidant behaviors. Maybe this review will make his next book.

The only sections of the book that I found useful were his discussion of the cognitive-behavioral aspects of the disorder (paranoid thinking, over-generalization, and worst-case scenario thinking), and AVPD's co-morbidity with other disorders, but he only offers a few paragraphs of discussion on each one. Also, the case studies get to be pretty tedious. I found myself skimming them after a while.

I would only recommend this book to someone who hasn't already bought and read "Distancing." I don't think many other readers will get much from it, and I'm pretty sure most of them would regret shelling out the 40 bucks.

Interesting and compassionate treatment of a neglected diagnosis

Interesting treatment of an interesting topic which has received very little attention (in the form of works accessible to laypeople). Discusses reasons for this neglect, including the tendency of many professionals to lump AvPD together with Social Phobia (along with the author's reasons why he believes this is a bad idea.)

Uses many case studies to illustrate examples of what he's talking about, although sometimes digresses into using examples from his personal/professional life in what seemed like a slightly strange way to me (if nothing else I thought he could have simply described the incidents as belonging to an anonymous client.) This is something he's done in several of his previous works as well. (I have not read either of his works on Avoidant Personality Disorder so I cannot compare this work to them, or say whether it is simply a case of hardcover "rechauff�e".)

Is generally good about not aggressively pathologizing subjects (although it does creep in a little) and not pulling any political punches in how to locate "blame"; also makes the important distinction that having some of the symptoms of AvPD does not by definition mean one has the full-blown "disorder" (the mental health profession is long overdue for dimensional vs. categorical diagnoses IMO).

Makes an admirable attempt unlike many mental health professionals to focus not only on childhood experiences within the context of the parent-child triangle (hangover of Freudianism?) while neglecting peer/sibling relationships and/or larger interpersonal realities. Does not, however, really refer to larger political let alone cross-cultural factors (as when he "diagnoses" a Greek-American man based entirely on a letter without taking into account the family expectations that often exist within that group). Also has the courage to critique the sacred cow of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and make a plea for the integration of (pure) insight-based modes of healing into treatment. (In the context of the former makes the argument that cognitive therapy implicitly blames the patient, since it locates the source of the problems in his/her cognitive processes--I would go one further, however, and say that virtually *all* therapy since Freud has made that implicit judgment about clients since he [Freud] made his fateful decision to declare his patients' descriptions of being molested as subconscious wish-fulfillments [conceptualized thru the Oedipal Complex] rather than literal accounts of sex abuse [or metaphorical representations of extreme boundary violations]).

Also makes the unorthodox (to me) suggestion that in some cases pharmacotherapy is *not* indicated, as well as some interesting suggestions for treatment, as when for example he writes that for many avoidants, the advice to "do your own thing" should be avoided, since it often has a tendency to encourage them to continue pursuing isolating and/or idiosyncratic behavior patterns which contribute to their suffering.

Technicalities:

Would have liked it if he had devoted more than two sentences to passive-aggressive avoidants (especially since he has already written a book on passive-aggression.)

Would have been nice if table of contents had included subchapter titles/listings (perhaps a cost-cutting decision on the part of the publisher?).

Uses the German word "Anlage" oddly, without capitalizing the first letter or italicizing it or putting it in quotes (editors?), which can induce some people probably not to realize it's a foreign word.

The word "lose" is spelled "lyse" several times throughout the text.

Also uses the word Zen seemingly to refer to *all* Buddhist practice(s), in the context of discouraging an overly withdrawn approach to the world (did this in a previous book as well). While the point is well-taken it is perhaps somewhat injudicious to true Buddhist practice, Zen or otherwise, since it (to me) conflates much of what these disciplines offer with their popular (mis)conceptions.

Misuses the word "disinterested" (like most people nowadays) when he means "uninterested" (disinterested means neutral or objective).

As a final note I would love to see this author tackle some other diagnoses, in particular either Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)-I think his insights and writing styles could be very useful to many people, myself included.
