The book was spot on for the period for which ...

The book was spot on for the period for which it was written. Many aspects of it, regarding managing people and teams, motivation and productivity still are. Other aspects regarding development process are less relevant in today's fast paced Framework-rich development environments, where protracted up front Requirements and Design activities (read: "Waterfall") have been superseded by more iterative, agile approaches.
The second criticism I have is that as a novel it is too simplistic. The characters are one dimensional and the situations overly simplistic. The book similar in many ways to Goldratt's "Critical Chain" and "The Goal". Goldratt was there first...

This book was a surprise. It was assigned to my daughter, in one of her college classes. I am a public health professor. I took it by chance, read it and like it very much.. I liked the idea of conceiveing a fiction book as a tool to teach soft concepts. The book is non-sense and funny, and it reaches its objectives. I learn many interesting things about projects management.. As a teacher, I would like to congratulate the author.

A great pictorial into the weapons and gear through history.

I liked the book for what it is. If you want to learn details of various military actions, wars, or insight into leaders and power struggles, this 8th not the book. This is a pictorial review of weapons and military gear through the ages. Also machines of war such as ships, planes, tanks from early on and into the present. More of a browsing coffee table book than a reference book. But the pictures are very good, the book is quality and the explanations accompanying them is interesting. I enjoyed the book, and it might spark enough interest for someone to want to dig deeper into history. It is world wide not just American military items. Hope this is helpful.

My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.

An awesome 'coffee table' book about military history

This book is simply gorgeous to look at whether your a military history 'geek' like me, or not. The book is large in size & scope & has tons of amazing pictures of weapons, uniforms, battles etc. This book strikes just the right balance between military 'eye candy' for the novice military buff, and snippets of information/opinion about the hundreds of weapons on display for history majors like myself. Many books try and get this balance between information/entertainment and very few succeed--but this book hits the mark--it will stay in my collection for years to come.

High expectations, low satisfaction

This book is aimed at analysing costing issues in business. However, I didn't find much useful information. Too many calculations of more or less same issue. I would have preffered to see more costing methods taking into considerations different types of businesses (industrial but also tourist and services business). I thought to use this book as one of my bibiliographic list regarding a business administration course which I conduct, but this book wouldn't be so helpfull. Compared to other books, this book failed to offer value for money,to the best of my judgment.

Great for anyone who wants to be more informed about securing anything that runs over HTTP

This is a fantastic and thorough book, which was exactly what I wanted.

Far and away, my favorite part about this book is the depth to which it explains the technologies that underlie both ASP.NET Web API (namely HTTP) and security, for example X.509 certificates, Federation services, hashing, digital signing and encryption. At every step of the way real code is presented to either use the facilities described or to implement the services in question (even though the implementations are sometimes just for illustration, and not full implementations of production quality systems).

I would flat-out recommend this book to anyone who needs or would like to learn about web technology security. Although you'll have to put up with a little Web API material you might not be specifically interested in, 90% of the book is relevant to all web programming. And even if you aren't interested much in Web API - read it cover to cover anyway. The essence of RESTful web services is leveraging the power of HTTP - which underlies most web related programming I've encountered. And even though the book doesn't specifically address technologies like JSON, CORS, ETags and Cookies, their role in web programming is illuminated though the context of securing Web API, which should help the reader understand these and other subject from a perspective not always addressed in other sources.

Let me stress - much of this book is not specific to Web API. In fact, if you only wanted to secure a web-enabled application of any type, most of this book applies to what you're trying to do. That having been said, if you do need to work on a Web API application, you'll find everything you need right here.

I can tell you that before reading this book, I had played with OAuth 2.0 to the point of even getting an application talking to LinkedIn. Now I understand what I was doing.

I recommend this book for anyone:
- Somewhat experienced with C#. You won't get anything out of the code samples unless you know C# to at least be able to read the syntax. The author explains the code samples extensively, so this isn't an absolute requirement, but it'll help you get the most out of the book.
- Interested in learning more in depth about web programming having done some.
- Interested in ASP.NET Web API, but willing to learn about the platform itself from other sources.
- Interested in computer security in general, or specifically in the securing of web applications (beyond even Web API).
- Interested in RESTful web services (although if you hate security, you won't find the bulk of the book to be useful).
- Thinking about integrating cloud type software with other software, and how you can go about providing authentication and authorization across the cloud boundaries.

I don't recommend this book for someone:
- Totally unfamiliar with C#.
- Completely new to web programming.
- Considering her/himself to be an expert on web security topics, and wants to become an expert Web API application designer. You won't be learning about how to put together a Web API, just how to secure it.

Negatives for the book:
The index isn't very good, or at least, after I read the book and I wanted to reread about a specific topic, I had to find it myself by context matching with the table of contents. The index never listed the items I wanted to review.

There is a lot of code. The author does as good a job as I've seen explaining what each snippet does and how it's important, but still there are a few places where page after page of code is presented. Still, my preference is to only get the really important lines of code so that I can focus on the topic at hand, and not have to mentally trace variables from method listing to method listing. Some folks might prefer it this way, but I think it muddies up an otherwise good read.

Pure gold

This book is absolutely amazing and extremely well written and impressive in how much it covers. If you're not too familiar with web security, this book does a great job explaining the concepts and the reasoning behind modern web security from the ground up. Badri maintains a conversation as the book progresses from the basic of HTTP to token-based api security. The code samples are sure classic in many future projects not only because of how digestable they are but also based on the surrounding explanation. There is plenty of great code samples that are easily readable and formattable. The book shows implementations of windows identity foundation as well as TWO methods of implementing an OAuth 2.0 Resource & Authorization Server and how to use the access tokens to implement security in the ASP.NET Web Api.

Even if ASP.NET Web Api isn't your method of choice for creating JSON/XML and RESTful services, there is so much to take away from this book. It's an absolute buy and a pleasure to read.

Wow - talk about detailed

Great book, very detailed.

A wonderful overview of how to secure Asp.net Web API. I appreciated the ground up approach to the book. At first I felt like there was a lot of unrelated material being covered (because I was mainly interested in the OAuth 2.0 workflows), but in the end the material covered was so well put together - each chapter built on the previous chapter.

A very well written book - one of the top security books I have read recently.

Also I loved the addition of chapter 15 - a 2013 OWASP list of the top 10 security vulnerabilities and how they relate to ASP.NET Web API - I didn't see that coming a great way to end the book.

Just not good. Not sure if it's even trying to be.

Book lags behind typical Manning publications. Coming off of the very excellent PostGIS in Action perhaps I had unrealistic standards. There are two ways to teach material: by-example, or foundationally. This book is an attempt at by-example, but it lags behind. If you're going to teach by-example, you need to start out with /simple/ atomic examples. This book fails wholeheartedly in that regard. The first example of an Angular Application references what seems like every chapter in the book.

I read about 25% percent of the book. I sense no direction and no aha moment insight.

About me: 20 years of experience developing web apps. Read hundreds books on the topic. Never used Flux/Angular. Expert level in Backbone and Apostrophe.

UPDATE, down to one star. I just can't in good faith give this two stars. This book is so bad that it really couldn't get worse. I'm not sure it has value. One of the other reviewers mentions a vlog to learn Angular, and I've since read the official "guide." The official guide is an order of magnitude more comprehensive and better formatted than this book. It's also free. The Udemy is fantastic as well. This resource may have some value in a vacuum, but it has no value whatsoever in the ecosystem of educational material it finds itself. In the past two years, the only tech book worse than this that I've read is Decentralized Applications: Harnessing Bitcoin's Blockchain Technology.

Well written & well illustrated--Covers a lot of Angular 2 & TypeScript territory but needs more Webpack/angular-cli coverage

It takes a long time and a lot of hard work to create a software how-to book. For one thing, you're constantly trying to hit a constantly moving target just at the right moment when the book is released. As it turns out, Google moved beyond SystemJS, the "universal module loader" (bundler) used in this book, a few months ago in favor of Webpack. That occurred before the release of this book. And the versatile Angular command-line interface angular-cli also moved to Webpack last year. But in this well-written, well-illustrated book, you mostly build and enhance projects based on the SystemJS library. Then, in the final chapter, you get to "Bundling and deploying applications with Webpack." The prevalent influence of SystemJS should not disqualify this book from consideration. You can learn a lot about Angular 2 and TypeScript from the text, illustrations and code examples. And, if you are a working Angular developer seeking to learn Angular 2, you likely may encounter some development environments where SystemJS is still favored. It won't hurt to know how to work with it. The authors do provide enough information about Webpack and angular-cli to build and test a simple project. And, in the book's appendixes, the focus is on providing a detailed overview of ECMAScript 6 (ES6) and using TypeScript as a language for Angular applications. I give the book four stars for Angular 1-to-Angular 2 with TypeScript usefulness, plus the authors' hard work. And I wish more time and energy had been available to develop stronger coverage of Webpack and angular-cli. Perhaps this can be done in the next edition? (My thanks to Manning Books for providing an advance reading copy.)

If you want to learn about the new web framework from Google ( and Microsoft ) that is hopefully here to stay (...I looking at you FLEX) then this book is for you.

Excellent textbook, missed the online resource

This book was a great tool in my Global Health class. There's lots of tables and charts included, which not only break up the text nicely but provide a lot of useful information. The opening vignettes are really good as well, and help set the tone for the chapter. My favorite part about this textbook was the "Main Messages" section at the end of the chapters. The summary it provided was great and it proved to be a helpful study tool.

The Pros:
-easy to read
-very informative
-excellent, up-to-date statistics
-summary section at the end of each chapter

The Cons:
-the online resource wasn't available when I took the class. I used the previous edition's online quizzes to study, but it certainly would have been ideal if the current online resource was available.

This book is the real thing I've been looking for to help me improve. You can read a lot about sailing tactics etc. but if you're body isn't up to it, it's a waste of time, you have to do the work. The author has been in the Olympics and a World Champ and is now a coach of current world champs, is sports scientist as well as a sailor is generous with what he's learned and experienced. Some of the training exercises are hard, much too difficult if you're not fit but it shows how to build yourself up. Good advice on diet which can really help. Worth having a look at his dvd of crossing Bass Strait in a Laser, you'd need to be REALLY fit to do that!

Sailing Fitness & Training is a must for anyone who has ambitions to sail competively. I bought this for my son who is competing at a high level in dinghy racing and both he and his partner found the book to be very informative. I actually picked up a few tips myself on nuitrition.....a very good package for the serious sailer

Blackburn first explains why and how sailing fitness and bodyweight is important for racing dinghies, then how to achieve your goals.
Until I read this book, I was convinced I could never put on weight. After following his dietary and exercise tips, I gained 8kg in 6 months and jumped from mid-fleet to top-10.

About the Author
Dennis Rodman is a seven-time NBA rebounding champion. During his career with the NBA he earned 5 Championship rings, and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991. In 2011, Rodman was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He splits his time between Huntington Beach, California, and West Orange, New Jersey.

Jack Isenhour is an award-winning television journalist, writer, and decorated veteran. While enrolled at West Point, Isenhour played on Bob Knight’s first college basketball team. After being honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain, Isenhour began his career in communications and was the cocreator and executive producer of PBS’s nationally syndicated talk show Freedom Speaks. He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A Good "Brutally honest" book

Dennis Rodman is a great basketball player, he literally changed the game, and pop cultural simultaneously!

This is a great read. Discussing his views of the NBA, his relationships, his family, his struggles with alcohol, and his unconventional fame. It is a comeback story, filled with very funny drunken stories, and the will and desire he has to overcome it. Idk if he'll ever make it back into the nba, but if that is what he wants to do I think he deserves a shot!

And you all deserve to read this book!!!

A friend recommended this book...it was not one that I would normally read because I thought it would focus mostly on basketball...boy was I surprised, it WOWED me!!!!
