Please write a book as advertised!

On the back cover this book states there is in depth analysis of Carlsen's games. No there is not!! The discussion Crouch talks about Carlsen's chess is interesting but it most certainly is not in depth either. He really short shrifts us in this book! If you want excellent analysis of the games that Crouch presents, London 2012 and Wik aan Zee 2013 plus several losses before these tournaments, go to ICC, the internet chess club, and click on their video coverage which is done in great depth. In one of the losses, to Anand, he wraps up commentary at move 34 while Carlsen battled on to move 76. He makes other comments like,"Black has to do something with his pawns, otherwise the White Knights are going to gallop through",page 16 on the McShane-Carlsen game. This is just plain awful commentary. It is so bad it is not even superficial. Maybe players who are new to the game will like this book but if you are rated over 1200USCF, save your money.

Entertaining and instructive

I like the verbose explanations. The variational analysis is sparing and only to corroborate and lend substance to the verbal explanations.There's real insight in the notes and Crouch has thought long and hard about the games he's analysed. He's also a master of prose -- the book is a riveting read. So many chess books these days are just glorified engine analyses thinly camouflaged with some spare and clumsy words. Not Crouch's books.

The heart of the book -- over two hundred pages -- examines Carlsen's games in just two tournaments (London Chess Classic 2012, and Wijk Aan Zee 2013), played over a two-month period, when Carlsen decisively broke free from the rest of the pack of leading players.

A titled player might be able to pick holes in the analysis but I'm merely an average-to-strong club player and the style and depth of Crouch's analysis suits me just fine. If it's an engine dump of variations you want, stay away from this book. If you want a clean and compelling prose style with genuine insight into positions and games, buy the book.

A Good Look at Carlsen's style before the Championship match.

Actually, I rather liked this book as I do much of Crouch's writings. Quite apart from the hype on the back of the book, the book was written mainly to show Carlsen's games from the two tournaments that lead to Carlsen's topping of Kasparov's rating record and these games are fairly well annotated, for instance, notes to Carlsen-Harikrisna take up 16 pages!

I suppose, if anything, Crouch could cut back on some of the verbal explanation and include a bit more in variations. As a prelude to those two tournaments, Crouch analyzes Carlsen's loses from 2010 thru 2012 preceding the London Classic of 2012. His loss to Anand does lack annotations after move 34, but the moves pretty well speak for themselves. What Crouch does is to give the critical moments in the games along with alternatives and makes some astute observations about Carlsen's style in the openings and his approach to the game.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't include any of the losses Carlsen suffered after Wijk aan Zee 2013, most notably losing 2 of the last three games in the FIDE Candidates and only edging Kramnik in tie-break points.. Then he lost a game to Wang Hao in the Norway Masters finishing second to Karjakin and then to Caruana in the Tal Memorial to Caruana while finishing second to Gelfand. Some of these losses, no doubt could not make it into the book due to space and time considerations.

This book, however, is a fine prelude to the upcoming match between Carlsen and Anand for the World Champion title. Too bad we don't have a similar book on Anand.

I am 51 years old and have been a secretary more or less since I left school. I took the requisite Pitmans shorthand course whilst at school and have never been able to understand it, all those squiggles and lines. I have used my own speed writing version of words through the years and have managed to get by (as long as I dealt with the notes as soon as I had written them and the dictator wasn't too quick - so it was half memory and half being able to read my own shorthand version). But now, everything is so clear and makes complete sense. I take your book on the train every morning and even after the first reading it completely made sense and I could even remember most of what I had read in the first chapter and believe me my memory at retaining new info is not as it used to be. Even when I was reading your abbreviations I was able to see what they were in a lot of cases before I checked the meaning. I am thoroughly enjoying learning a new skill from a book that is so simple to understand and I have already started to implement my new dictionary of words when taking notes. This book was very easy to use as it contains exercises to work through which really helped me with my business as I often need to take lengthy notes in meetings which also meant my notes were easier to read afterwards.

After taking shorthand in school and having a hard time using it, this is a great alternative. It is simpler and easy to remember. It is great for business meetings, letter taking and for college lectures. A great book!

Easier notetaking

This method of speed writing is easy to learn, so you will use it! Even if you learn only some of the methods included, you will be able to take faster notes and understand them.

This method of speed writing uses short cuts to write words, it does not use symbols like short hand. Because the short cuts are logical, you will be able to understand your notes when you need to refer to them later. Also, you will not need to finish the entire course before you can start using the skills. I incorporate what I have already learned in my note taking, so notes are easier and faster to write, but I still have several lessons to finish in the book. In other words, you will begin benefiting from the course after the first lesson!

Grade 3-5-- The old rural school at Mayfield has been closed, and Meg, her brother, and her friends are being sent to the larger Parkview school. It is 1960, and racial integration in schools is a tender issue. Parents gently warn the country kids that they may encounter discrimination in the new school, and sure enough, it happens. Meg is the only black child in her class. When it is time to pick teams for baseball (an important event for Mayfield kids), they are ignored. A subplot involves a shell-shocked war veteran the kids call Old Hairy and who eventually becomes their protector. Meg and Billie are unwillingly drawn into a playground fight, but all ends well with a good baseball game. The racial tension inherent in this story is diluted: all of the children from the old school are picked on, black and white alike. The author attempts to portray prejudice without using pejorative language, but it just doesn't sound scary, only inappropriate. Mayfield CRossing

This book is very helpful beacuse many people don't care what type of person you are on the inside. Moving schools is hard but moving homes is the worst thing you have to do when you are young.
My favorite part of the book was when Meg was living in Mayfield and thay played softball. Softball was their favorite thing to do. The worst part was when Meg and her brother moved to Parkview.
I would like my brother to read this book because I don't like the way he treats some people. Maybe this could help him change.

Dealing with racial issues in children and schools

Hi! I am a student at Elizabethtown College. I had the opportunity to read Mayfield Crossing by Vaunda Nelson for my children's literature class. I loved this book!! I think it is a great book for all children to read. It looks on both sides of dealing with racism in school. It is the story of a girl who loves playing baseball. She is moving to a new school for the upcoming school year. Of course she is excited about the move because it means going to the new school with the brand-new ball field.
The night before they go to sleep before their first day of school, Billie(Meg's brother) and Meg are both warned about how they might not be welcomed at their new school. Neither really understand what their parents are talking about until they go into school the next day. They quickly realize that almost all the children are white and they are not welcome to play baseball because they are black. They do not let this small bump get into their way of playing baseball and doing well in school. It is a story that proves it does not matter what color you are, you can accomplish whatever you want if you put your mind to it. I would definately recommend this book for classroom use!!

Welcome to Mayfield Crossing where Meg and Billie used to go to school. But now they go to Parkview where they are the only African American kids. Meg has problems because of this. She loves baseball and she wanted to play, but the white kids did not let her especially, Clayton because of the color of her skin. What can she do when people judge her by the color of her skin?
I liked this book because it had a lot of action like when Meg went to Ivy and told her that her team needed one more person even though she was a white girl. It was Meg's point of view and Meg really describes things that you can visualize. When I read this book I got a real visual about what was happening. When I read this book I was very surprised when Meg and Billie got in a fight with Clayton.
I would recommend this book for any age. I think everyone who reads this book would like it and learn a lesson from the story. They would like this book because of the action and conversation.

About the Author
For over thirty years, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) traveled the length and breadth of North America, seeking to record in words and images the traditional life of its vanishing indigenous inhabitants. Like a man possessed, he strove to realize his life’s work, which culminated in the publication of his encyclopedia The North American Indian. In the end, this monumental work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2000 illustrations.

Great compendium, tiny pictures

Really great compendium with lots of quality pictures from the original twenty volumes, but... I believe the book is too small (actually pocket size), some of the pictures are just thumbnails. I was expecting full page pics, a little bit disappointing.

Poor reproduction quality

While I am pleased to see so many of Curtis's images in a single book, I bought this with the hope of sketching some of the portraits. There is hardly any contrast and hardly any detail. Everything is soft and dark. I can't see enough detail to draw from. I would have happily paid more for better quality images. It is a disappointing purchase.

TOO SMALL

I own many Curtis books and I must admit, I don't yet have this one. However, I'm not sure I ever will. People- What is wanted here are copies of this mans wonderful photographs and this size book just can't possibly do this art justice. I won't buy it and don't suggest you do either.
