"We've Been Hearing About Spook-Trains!"
By R. M. Fisher
The Famous Five - three siblings, their cousin and her dog - are probably among the most famous of Enid Blyton's literary creations, coming in just behind Noddy and The Magic Faraway Tree. They are certainly the best-known of her juvenile detectives series (would kids these days even know who Secret Seven and The Five Find-Outers are?) and the adventures of Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timmy the dog have never been out of print since their first publication in 1942. Spanning twenty one books, a typical installment will involve the children wandering about the countryside with no adult supervision, having lavish picnics that include potted meat, chocolate cakes and ginger-beer, and always tumbling head-first into a mystery whether they mean to or not.
The three siblings are Julian, Dick and Anne; each one a typical character type. Julian, the eldest, is responsible, intelligent, and assumes the leadership role on each adventure, whilst Dick is more easy-going and humorous. Anne is the domestic-in-training who takes care of the cooking and cleaning, and is usually the one to act as mother the others despite being the youngest. But it is their cousin George who is the most interesting (and thus the most popular) character. Her real name is Georgina, but she insists on George, wears her hair short and wishes that she had been born a boy. Sometimes surly and quick-tempered, her greatest joys in life are her mongrel dog Timmy and her small private island off the coast.
The children are lightly sketched, but are sympathetic, well-mannered and likeable. Functioning well as a team and each providing something useful and unique to the group dynamic is probably the reason why this particular series has lasted as long as it has. The mysteries usually involve stumbling into some sort of criminal undertaking, and with their requisite pluck and determination, the five gather enough information to safely inform the authorities - though usually not without earning the unwelcome attention of the criminals first.
In "Five Go Off To Camp", the children are about to embark on a camping trip to the moors, deriving great enjoyment out of planning for their trip and the novelty of spending each night in sleeping bags. For a change, the children will be accompanied by an adult; an absent-minded teacher from their school who is out on the moors to research insect life. Don't worry though, Mr Luffy doesn't impinge on their children's independence in any way; in fact he's so periphery to the story, and so content to leave the children to their own devices, that one wonders why he's necessary to the narrative at all. I suspect Blyton had the idea for a befuddled but kindly professor who could waggle his ears, and didn't want to leave him out.
The Five immediately take to the moorlands, especially when they become friends with Jock, a boy who lives on a nearby farm, but things really start to get interesting when they find a series of railroads leading to an abandoned yard where an old peg-legged man warns them off and tells them about "the spook-trains". Naturally the children are intrigued, and begin to make investigations into what seem to be trains that still run in the underground tunnels beneath their campsite.
Though not the best Five adventure, there is a great use of atmosphere at work, ranging from the wild, mysterious moor, to the bright and cheerful, but rather suspiciously lucrative farm, to the dark underground tunnels in which the crux of the adventure takes place. The word "spook-trains" is enough to send a chill down anyone's spine, and Blyton makes the most of her evocative setting. Are there really ghost trains in the old tunnels? Or is something else going on in the desolate countryside?
Though certainly a good read, much of the values dissonance that has plagued recent republications of Blyton's work is apparent here. Naturally, it is the boys who get to have all the nighttime adventures, despite George being desperate (and more than capable) of joining in. But Julian and Dick will have none of it: George must stay behind to look after Anne, despite the nearby presence of an adult, because Anne is too scared to have anything to do with the adventure. It's all quite infuriating to a 21st century reader. Girls aren't the only ones that can get aggravated by sexism, and many boys may feel annoyed at the passivity of Anne and the refusal of the boys to let George come with them (and then punish her for her anger at being left out).
There is a bit of compensation at the end, in which both George and Anne get to save the day (Anne by proving she's not a coward, and George in a more proactive way), but it still grates on a modern audience.
Likewise, there is an odd and rather disconcerting scene about mid-way through the book, in which the children more or less terrorize another child that they deign a "momma's boy": ridiculing his name, chasing him with a tomahawk, and convincing him that a bull is chasing him. Blyton has clearly designed him to me made fun of, and he is a bit snotty, but it's still rather disconcerting at how quickly the children turn on him.
Ah well, these books are very much of their times, yet despite a few cringe-worthy moments, they haven't run out of steam yet.

THE FAMOUS FIVE- the politically correct version
By Phillip Taylor MBE
THE FAMOUS FIVE
THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!
Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.
When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.
It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).
Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.
