This book presents a study of language - and how a certain type of word can be used as a tool of control. The terms that are used in relation to certain social and political issues can affect perception, cognition, emotion and behaviour. Certain terms are of the form that can obscure issues, confuse and manipulate people - hence facilitating social and political control. In particular this book examines the meaning of the term ‘multiculturalism’ (and the related terms ‘racism’ and ‘equality’). This examination illustrates much about a certain type of word, including the consequences of using such a word. These terms are nebulous-power-words – of which ‘multiculturalism’ is shown to be one example (and ‘racism’ and ‘equality’ are others). Two perspectives on meaning are taken in this paper: the rational and the social representation perspectives. From a rational perspective, the definition of a term is its meaning. For such a definition to be adequate it must possess certain characteristics, (e.g. high referentiality). It is shown that ‘multiculturalism’ is rationally inadequate, but its irrationalities can be explained from a social representation perspective – an approach that demonstrates, amongst other things, how an irrational term can be used in communication and what meaning it holds to people. As a term that is inadequate from a rational perspective, such a term should not be used in rational discourse – the fact that it is renders such discourse inadequate. As a specific type of irrational term, nebulous-power-words are emotional and powerful – and the power of such terms is contingent upon their lack of rationality and the fact that people do not realise their true nature. Without these characteristics the emotional content could not exert the power that it does. Terms of this kind can exert control by, amongst other things, obscuring truth, inhibiting rationality, confusing people and distorting perception – and hence, inter alia, the emotions and social forces associated with such terms can act to manipulate people. It is the very nature of these terms that enables them to operate as powerful tools of control. In the context of ‘multiculturalism’ such control has been exerted in Britain (and elsewhere) in relation to immigration policies and immigration-related phenomena.

Love all of the Secret books

I downloaded the Secret series after reading reviews on Amazon. I am an adult over 30 years old and love books such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Kane Chronicles. I was looking for a similar series to read on a vacation for mindless fun and fantasy. The secret series is amazing, I could not put the books down and read all of them within a few days. They are funny, the characters are absolutely adorable, and since the writer is writing for children, you can overlook things that you normally would not for adult books. The books had their fun moments and I love how the friendship between the three lead characters develops, the books are also a good role model because they follow a similar thought as Percy Jackson series that "different" does not mean "bad", take that all the "mean girls" and "bullies" at school.
When I have children, this is on their reading list. Highly recommend for kids and adults like me who like such books.

You Have to Stop This

Dear Reader of this Review,
If you are reading this review right this moment, for whatever reason you may have for doing so, then you are in luck; for today, the day I have finished reading this book, I have PLENTY of information to build you to your final decisions for, well... whatever reasons you are looking at purchasing this wonderful work of writing. To begin, let's start with the negatives of this book, because the list is short, as in, one thing on the list: It is sad when you get finished with this book because it is so, for lack of a better word, good, that you don't want it to end! The development of the characters is superb and the plot line has patterns in itself as it unveils the patterns of the mystery. Be careful though, you might be surprised as the events in this book twist and turn. Yes, with a stolen mummy, museum work, and an incredible trip this is a strange piece of literature. Though however strange it may be, between the excellence of the writing itself, the hilarious humor and personality, and the suspense... I couldn't put the book down. You are defiantly missing out if you don't read this book. As the biggest fan of Pseudonymous Bosch, I say GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great book!!!

I love the main characters and their unique differences compared to other people in this great series all leading up to The Secret! Everything was great and nicely suspenseful except the ending. Why PB did you not tell us about the later paths of life the children took in the future in the epilogue?!?!?!?! I wish there was another book in the series but come to think of it if there was another book about these intriguing characters this serie would just not make sense.
Anyway it's is a good book for people who don't mind some scary scenes or genres and for very adventurous people. :)

Entertaining read

As a nurse of 27 years I could not be more pleased with the review on my profession. The authors interviewed real people and gave a realistic portrayal of what nursing is like. They captured our bizarre sense of humor, our joys and heartbreaks. Truly a wonderful read.

It's concise and cheap and it says a lot of how the R100RS was thought and projected. The pictures are interesting. If you don't know the history of this bike, and you own one of it, you should really read it: you'll know you ride a piece of motorcyclist engineering history. This book is a bit haphazzardly put together. But yet, I really enjoyed the pictures showing Caroline and Shenita doing tgheir thing. The flavors are very well combined, and this is among my favorite raw books. Wish the show videos were available for purchase. I watch them almost daily on you tube, and worry that the tv stations you tube channel will remove them since the show is no longer on air. Miss you on the air Caroline. I am a fan. I live in California, and came across your show during a google search. Hope you are still involved in raw vegan foods, and teaching.

I really like the recipes in this book! It's a great introduction to raw cooking with simple recipes that are easy to make and taste really good.

I found this book after watching the author's TV show on Milwaukee Public Television. Caroline and her daughter really make raw cooking fun, creative, and normal. This is not an easy lifestyle (vegetarian and vegan are hard enough) but their recipes make incorporating raw foods or going raw simpler.
